About Jeremiah Clements
Jeremiah was born in England in 1607. His father, partner in the shipping company in England that brought many of the early pilgrims to this country, died in 1609. His mother Elizabeth came to America, 4 children and 2 servants in tow. They arrived in Jamestown, on the ship "George", June 10, 1611.
During his lifetime, Jeremiah acquired more than a square mile of land on the James River shore at the present location of Clarement. He was a member of the Assembly of James Citie, January 12, 1641, and represented the Surry side in the House of Burgesses in 1642. He styled himself Jeremiah Clement of Upper Cheapokes, Gentleman. He was sufficiently affluent to have had bronze spurs and a place to wear them.
Married to Edith Pierce in 1634, in James City, Va. His children are thought to be John, Ezekiel, Amy and Francis, Anna and Elizabeth. (subject to correction) A reference indicates he was married a 2nd time, to Jery M. Edge, after Edith. I will investigate and comment further. - J.M.C.Woodall
