Jeremiah Cloud, Sr.

2. NOTE: Jeremiah's will is on record at New Castle, DEL. (His land was among that in dispute between Penn. and Delaware.) He came to America in 1682 with his father and brothers, Robert and William, aboard the ship Unicorn. He was a cordwainer and worked in leather. He was probably married in England and that Elizabeth was his second wife.

William (his father) became a member of the Soc of Friends in 1663/4.

WILL

Jeremiah Cloud, who inherited 200 acres from his father William, had a much larger estate upon his death 17 years later. Jeremiah made his Will Feb 20, 1715/16 same probated Dec 1, 1717, as follows: "

I, Jeremiah Cloud of Rexland Manor in County of New Castle upon the Delaware in Penn., cordwainer, being "sick and weak" give unto my beloved wife, ELIZABETH, and son, WILLIAM CLOUD, whom I constitute executors of my Will, my manor plantation where I now dwell with cattle etc.Immediately after wife's death it is to become property of WILLIAM; to sons JEREMIAH and MORDECIA 500 acres in Township of Marlborough, Chester Co.; to son, DANIEL, tract of land known as "Mount Pleasant", formerly
land of Nathaniel Lampley near Chichester containing 200 acres; to son JOHN one shilling; to daus. SARAH, HANNAH, ELIZABETH at 21 certain pounds of ancient money".

 The Will of Jeremiah Cloude. In the Name of god Amen the twentieth day of february in the yeare of our Lord1715/6 I Jeremiah Cloude of Rexland Manor in the County of New Castle upon Delaware in the Province of Pensilvania Cordwainer, Being very weak and Sick of Body but of Sound and perfect mind, memory, and understanding (thanks be givenunto God therefore) Calling to mind the mortailty of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye. Do therefore make Constitute and ordain this my Last Will and Testament. That is to say, principally and first of all I giveand recomend mySoule into the hands of god that gave it And as for my Body I Recomend it to the Earth therein to be buryed in a decent and Christian like manor at the care and discretion of my Executor, And as touching and concerning Such Temperall Estate with which it hath pleased God to bless me withall I give dispose and bequeath as in forme and manor following. I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Elisabeth (who together with my Son William Cloude I make ordain Constitute the Sole and only Exectuors of this my Last Will and Testament) the Plantation I now am dwelling on Together with the House, outhousing, household Goods, Cattle, Cerme? or any other Moveable Moveables or appurtenances whatsoeverthat are orshallbe found belonging or appertaining to me on the said Plantation (except what shall hreafter be exapted and Specified) to be by her freely possessed and enjoyed during her Life, And after decease to dispose of five pounds outof the said plantation to whom she shall Soo fit and .....Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved Son William (who also is the other Exectuor of this my Last Will and Testament the above mentioned Plantation together with the house outhouseHoushold goods, cattle, ?farme together with all sundray? moveable and appurtenances whatsoever to be by him immediately after the death of Elisabeth my wife held and freely possessed and enjoyed and by his Heirs Executors Administrators or assignes for ever: ItemI give to my beloved son Jeremiah and Mordecai a Tract of Land Containing five hundred acres be it more or less with all and every thing thereunto belonging lying in the Township of Marlborough in Chester County and in theProvince of pensilvania in which they are now Residents to be equally and proportionably divided between them and to be by them their Heirs Executors and admistrators and assigns, hold and enjoyed for ever. Item I give to my beloved Son Daniela Certain tractof Landknown by the Name of Mount Pleasant formerly the Plantation of Nathaniel Lamp... and lying near Chichester in Chester County in the Province of Pensilvania Containing Two hundred acres be it more or lesse to be by him his Heirs Executors Adminstrators or assigns held and enjoyed for ever.  Item I give to my Son John One Shilling Current money of this Province. Item I give to my Daughter Hannah five pounds, Current money to be Levyed out of the Estate I now dwell on and to bepaid unto her within one year after decease. Item I give to my Daughter Sarah twenty pounds of Current money to be Levyed likewise out of the Estate I now dwell and to be paid to her within two years after my decease. Item I give to my DaughterElisabeth Twenty pounds Curent money to be levyed out of the estate given to my Son Daniel to  be paid to her as soon as she shall arrive to the age of Twenty one years. Lastly I Constitute ordain and appoint my beloved Sons Jeremiah and Mordicai as alsoe my trusty friend Joel Bayley Trustees in behalf of my Son Daniel and my Daughter Elisabeth to take them into their protection as alsoe to Oversee and take care of the Plantation given to him by me impowering them hereby to sell theLand if need soo require for his use or as they may or shall seem convenient and to provide him a Settlement as near them as Conviency will permit and also insure that they they take care that there by Twenty pound Levyed outof...paid to my: Daughter Elisabeth as soon as she shall ...... to the age of Twenty one years. 6. BIOGRAPHY: Cloud, William, of Calne, in Wiltshire, England, purchased land 7

Oct 1682, which was afterwards laid out in Concord Township. The will of William

Cloud, of Concord "being aged and well stricken in years"was proved in 1702, in

which he mentions his sons, William, Jeremiah, Joseph, John and Robert. Of these

Joseph came over as a servant to John Bezer, and received his 50 acres of land

in Caln Township, where he was living in1709. John, William and Jeremiah

resided on Naaman's Creek for some time. William Jr. was living in Caln in

1715, and died there in 1720. His eldest son, Joseph, was there in 1719, but

probably at Pextang after this (Paxtan Twp. is now in Dauphine Co., near

Harrisburg, it was part of Lancaster Co. when it was formed in 1729 and then

became Dauphine Co. when it was formed). Joseph Sr. married Mary MOORE,

widow of Richard, and mother of Thomas and John Moore. He died in 1739.

Jeremiah Cloud died at Naaman's Creek, leaving children Jeremiah Jr., Mordecia, Daniel and others, of whom the first (Jeremiah Jr.). settled in the eastern part of

East Marlborough (now Popcopson) Township. Jeremiah Jr. married Ann BAILEY

about 1710, and hadchildren Elizabeth, Joel, William, Jeremiah III, Benjamin,

Mordecia and Rachel.

HISTORY OF DELAWARE CO. PA film #F3592 Santa Monica: "Cloud, Jeremiah was of age when his father, William Cloud immigrated to Pennsylvania. In 1686 he married Eliabeth Baily. He resided in Concord but his son Jeremiah in 1710 removed within the limit of Neward Meeting where he married Ann Bailey. The elder Jeremiah was a member of the Society of Friends at the time of his marriage."

  L.D. Prewitt writes page 50: Jeremiah Cloud I, cordwainer [shoemaker], born7 February 1658 in England; died 20 February 1716 (will pr. 2 December 1717 at Wilmington, New Castle County, Del (WB C-1:118); m in 1685 Elizabeth Bailey, born in England.  They lived at Rockland Mannor, Brandywine 100, and Rexland Manor in New Castle Co., Del. He probably came from England with his father. In his will he mentions Jeremiah II (Jr) and Mordecai Cloud in Marlborough; David in Chickester, called Mount Pleasant; and John Cloud; daus: Hannah, Sarah& Elizabeth; and wife Elizabeth. 1713-Jeremiah was selected by his brothers, as the one to whom the new patent, for 500 acres, originally purchased by their father in 1681, should be confirmed

1713, February 15-he conveyed 200 acres of this land to his brother John Cloud.

1713, 5mo 22-minutes of the Board of Property has the following: Signed a Pattent to Jeremiah Cloud for 500 acres, besides the Allowance in Naaman's Creek, ordered 12th mo 1703, date 20, 5 m0. Instant."

1717- Jeremiah died in Delaware

1717, December 21-Proven: The will of Jeremiah Cloud, of Rockland Manor, newCastle County, cordwainer, made February 20,1715/6 is on record in New Castle Co., Delaware. He makes the following bequests: To son Jeremiah Cloud, and son Mordecai Cloud 500 acres of Marborouh on which the live, sonDanile Cloud 200 acres inChichester (Mt. Pleasant.), son John Cloud one shilling, Daughter Hannah Cloud 5, Daughter Sarah Cloud 20, Daughter Elizabeth Cloud (not 21) 20, Wife Elizabeth Cloud and son William Cloud to be executors.

Interesting to note that Jeremiah was born in Calne Parish, Wiltshire, England, and his son William was born in Calne, PA! I'm guessing several families came to this part of Chester County, PA, and started a town named after their hometown in England.
