quote from 'Catalogue of the Names of First Puritan Settlers of the Colony of CT' by R R Hinman, 1846
Genealogy Dictionary of New England Settlers Vol 2 pg 47:
Dickens, Jeremiah, Windsor, often spell. Diggins, and Hinman on (pg) 21 gives date of 1648. He had a fam. bef 1790. Also talks about a Nathaniel Diggins, Providence, among freemen 1655 m wid. Joan Tyler but no more is told of him.
One thought on NAME ORIGIN: Diggins derives from O' Duibhgin, as does Deegan, Diggin, Digan, Deighan, Duighan, Dugan and probably Duggan. One authority claims three origins; An Clar (Clare), Gaillimh (Galway), and Lock Garman (Wexford). The name is most common in Uibh Fhaili (Offaly). May have been more than one family of origin. The name means Dark (or black) haired...so it's logical that there may may have been several families. Most prominent was in Laois the family estate (2000 acres) were stolen by the Earl of Coote in 1667, Sir Earl was sent to Ireland by Elizabeth to plunder kill as he found profitable.
Another: On my visits to Ireland, I was told that Diggins was not a Kerry name and no county seemed willing to accept responsibility for us. According to Leathanach (The Irish People) there are three possible origins; Clare, Galway, and Offaly (pretty much agrees with above-gcr)
Another: My Father son of Bill Diggins, who emmigrated from Waterford Ireland, always said that the name Diggins was an anglinization of the latin " Deos Genus". This, he said, could be translated as either " The Sons Of God" or " God's Balls".
