Private, Company E, 17th Battalion, Mississippi Cavalry. (Steed's Cavalry)

The gravestone application, filled out by J. Alex Smith (married Jeremiah's great-niece Virginia Ladner, daughter of Rutillus, granddaughter of Jeremiah's brother Elijah) indicates that Jeremiah died in 1865.

There is a discrepancy between the death date in most trees (July 30, 1866) and that of his brother Lenard Nathaniel, said to have died February, 1865. If the following is correct, Jeremiah probably died in February, 1865:

..."I understand after Jeremiah Ladner was killed by Jay Hawkers, Nathaniel went in pursuit of them. It was very bad weather and while crossing 'Wolf River' (Hancock County) in the sleet and rain, he froze in the saddle. When he reached home they had to cut him from the saddle. The exposure was to much for him, he developed pneumonia and died. He is buried in the little cemetery at Vancleave, near his old home place".... From The Ladner and Ladnier Chronicles by Leonard Slade

Note: Jayhawkers - Are local people who turned robbers when law enforcement broke down under war conditions.
