About Jerome Rinaldo Gorin
Message to all descendants:
I am working with the Decatur Masonic Temple in the restoration of the building and off of the main lobby there is a foyer to the auditorium that was dedicated to Jerome R Gorin and has a large painting of him in it. We were curious if you would be interested in helping to fund the restoration of this foyer? If you would like to see the foyer we can arrange a time to show you or we can take several pictures of it for you. Even if you can not help with the restoration it will still remain in his name. If you have any pictures or reproductions of him especially if they are Masonic we would consider hanging them in the foyer with his portrait. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Robert Archer
DAILY REVIEW 9/3/1897:
"JEROME R GORIN IS DEAD FOR SIXTY YEARS HE WAS A RESIDENT OF DECATUR SAW THE WHOLE CITY BUILT ACTIVE IN MANY INTERESTS
IT WAS WITH FEELINGS OF SINCEREST REGRET THAT THE COMMUNITY LEARNED THURSDAY MORNING OF THE DEATH OF HON. JEROME R. GORIN, ONE OF THE OLD SETTLERS OF THE COUNTY AND CITY AND ONE OF THE BEST BELOVED AND MOST HIGHLY RESPECTED OF ALL OUR CITIZENS. HIS DEATH OCCURRED SHORTLY BEFORE 6 OCLOCK AT THE FAMILY RESIDENCE, 345 PRAIRIE AVENUE. THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY AROSE ABOUT THE USUAL TIME AND ATTENDED TO THE EARLY HOUSEHOLD DUTIES, BUT IT WAS NOTICED THAT MR. GORIN, CONTRARY TO HIS USUAL CUSTOM, HAD NOT LEFT HIS ROOM. HIS DAUGHTER, MISS MATTIE GORIN, WENT TO HER FATHERS ROOM AND CALLED HIM, BUT HE MADE NO RESPONSE. SHE SENT FOR HER BROTHER O. B. GORIN, JUST ACROSS THE AVENUE AND TOLD HIM THAT SHE COULD NOT AROUSE HER FATHER. WHEN THE SON ENTERED THE ROOM HE SAW THAT HIS FATHER WAS DEAD OR APPARENTLY SO. DR. CASS CHENOWETH WAS HASTILY SUMMONED, AND AFTER AN EXAMINATION SAID THAT MR. GORIN HAD BEEN DEAD ABOUT AN HOUR, DEATH HAVING EVIDENTLY BEEN CAUSED BY APOPLEXY. ABOUT A YEARS AGO MR. GORIN HAD A SLIGHT STROKE OF PARALYSIS, BUT HAD APPARENTLY RECOVERED. HE ATTENDED TO HIS AFFAIRS AS USUAL, BUT HIS ADVANCED AGE WAS TELLING ON HIM AND HE WAS SEEN TO BE GRADUALLY FAILING. HE KNEW THAT HE COULD NOT LIVE MANY YEARS LONGER AT THE MOST. THE NUMBER OF SUDDEN DEATHS THAT HAVE OCCURRED AMONG THE OLD CITIZENS LATELY HAVE FREQUENTLY BEEN COMMENTED ON BY MR. GORIN, WHO PREDICTED THAT HIS OWN LIFE WOULD END IN THE SAME MANNER. IT WAS HIS WISH THAT IT SHOULD AND SO IT DID. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF SUFFERING AND DEATH APPARENTLY CAME UPON HIM JEROME R. GORIN WAS BORN IN HOPKINSVILLE, CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY. OCT 12, 1817 AND WAS A SON OF JOHN D AND MATTIE (THOMAS) GORIN. HIS FATHER WAS A NATIVE OF VIRGINIA AND DURING HIS BOYHOOD EMIGRATED TO KENTUCKY, WHERE HE ATTAINED MANS ESTATE. IN THE SPRING OF 1828 HE CAME WITH HIM AND HIS FAMILY TO ILLINOIS, LOCATING AT VANDALIA, THEN THE CAPITAL OF THE STATE. HE WAS A MERCHANT AND FARMER AND WAS ALSO FOR MAY YEARS RECEIVER IN THE LAND OFFICE. HIS DEATH OCCURRED IN VANDALIA, APRIL 26, 1846 IN IN THE FIFTY SIXTH YEAR OF HIS AGE. HIS WIDOW SURVIVED HIM THIRTY YEARS AND DIED JULY 13, 1876 AT THE AGE OF 89. IN 1833 JEROME R. GORIN CAME TO DECATUR, WHERE HE HAD TWO OLDER BROTHERS AND A SISTER LIVING. ONE BROTHER HENRY M WAS FOR MANY YEARS CLERK OF THE COURT, BUT LEFT THE OFFICE IN 1841. ELVIRA WHO HAD COME TO DECATUR IN 1830 MARRIED GENERAL ISSAC PUGH AND BOTH DIED IN THIS CITY AFTER REACHING AN ADVANCED AGE. THE GORIN FAMILY NUMBERED EIGHT CHILDREN, BUT THE ONLY SURVIVING MEMBERS ARE GLADDEN, NOW OF KANSAS CITY, MO AND MRS. MARIA KIRKMAN OF WINCHESTER.
MR. GORIN WAS ON APRIL 1, 1843 MARRIED TO MISS ELEANOR D. FAWCETT, WHO WAS BORN IN VIRGINIA AND IS A DAUGHTER OF ISAAC AND REBECCA FAWCETT. THEY HAVE SIX CHILDREN: MARY EMMA, WIFE OF C. C. MIDDLETON OF DALLAS TEX, ORVILLE R. CASHIER OF MILLIKINS BANK, IDA E, WIFE OF W. C. ARMSTRONG OF DECATUR, JEROME P. WHO IS IN CHARGE OF A PATENT FOR WEAVING CARPETS, IN NEW YORK CITY, MATTIE A AT HOME, AND HENRY GLADDEN OF CHICAGO."
