About Jesse Crump Grinstead

Jesse Crump Grinstead was born on November 26, 1798, in Charles City County, VA, 20 miles from Richmond on his father's plantation. He left for KY in 1818 where he lived in Madison County near Richmond, KY. He moved to Calaway County, MO in 1830 and Pettis County in 1833. He died June 27, 1884, and was buried near Longwood, Mo. He went to Madison County, KY in 1818. He married Elizabeth Mastin Clopton on March 23, 1823. They moved to MO in 1830.

At the age of 16, he substituted for his father who was drafted in the state militia of VA in the War of 1812 and in the latter part of 1814 he marched to New Orleans to participate in the famous battle that won the war. He served in Capt. John Armistead's Company of Artillery, Second Regiment, VA militia from August 25, 1814 to November 1814 and in the same company in Major Perkins' Command, Virginia Militia from October 25, 1814 to February 26, 1815. He received a pension of $8.00/month on October 1872.

Jesse Crump moved his family from Madison County, KY to Callaway County, MO in 1828 and then moved to Pettis County in 1873 where he died in 1874 near Hughesville, a placed named "Grinstead Hill."

He had 11 children: Mary, Rebecca, Edward (never married, died young in Arkansas as a Confederate soldier), Elizabeth, Eliza (married to James Greer of Johnson County, MO.

Jesse Crump settled on a small farm of 100 acres in Pettis County, MO, in 1833. During his active life, he farmed, owned and operated a grist mill and a distillery for many years. He was a large man, over six feet, weighed over 200 lbs. and had black eyes, heavy black beard, and cleft chin. Jesse Ransom Grinstead and his three sons also had cleft chins.

He and his wife were parents of Abner Grinstead, born in KY on February 26, 1829, who died on January 1, 1917, and buried in Knob Noster, MO. He was married to Charity Ann Wells on November 17, 1853. She was born in KY on June 16, 1833 and died on March 28, 1904 and buried in Knob Noster, MO.

His Pension Certificate is No. 19234, dated October 4th, 1872. He made $8/month.
