About Jesse Ewell Mankin

Possibly duplicate of Jesse Ewell Mankin

GEDCOM Note

The Second Hooper you have listed is my Great Grandfather who was the son of John Allen and Martha Lucinda Williams. Surprisingly Ive run into this forum searching for more of Hooper's family. I have researched and found Jessie's father to be William Mankin (1762- 1827) and His mother to be Sarah Pratner (1775-1850)

There might be a son named Joel that isn't listed.....born about 1807

(unverified) Found on the surry co. North Carlina tax list from 1794-1797. Few lears later we was in Patrick co. VA

He may have moved to North Carolina from Maryland when he was a young man, or he may have been born there.

In a newspaper article, March 15, 1946, the Beckley Post-Herald, of Beckley, WV. about Albert Davis who's grandfather is James Bryson. James Bryson came to WV from VA and bought thousands of acres. He died without leaving a will. There were no lawsuits. Hugh Davis, Albert's brothers-in-law Alexander Bryson and Jesse Mankin, got together and drew up some deeds to divide up the land.

3-9-9 JOHN MANKIN, son of Tubman Mankin and Jane Yopp Mankin, was born in Charles County MD in January 1745(11). He served as a Vestryman of Durham Parish, Charles County. In the Treasurer's Account of Durham Parish, in 1780, he is recorded for the payments of 60 lbs. of tobacco tithe.(12) He is mentioned in the Parish book for 2 taxables, and paying 30 lbs. of tobacco.(13) Along with his brother Charles, he is mentioned in a lease dispute with the Jesuits of St. Thomas Manor in Charles, County, MD. He married in Ann Arundel County, MD in about 1769, MASA born about 1750 (said to be a full-blooded Delaware Indian). They had issue 4 children:

3-9-9-1 Peter Mankins Sr., b. 19 Sep 1770 Cedar Point,MD.
3-9-9-2 Walter Mankins
3-9-9-3 Elizabeth Mankins
3-9-9-4 John Mankins(15

Lucinda Cloud, daughter of Rev. William Cloud and Elizabeth Mary Morgan, married James Mankin, son of Jesse Mankin. Jesse Mankin was surety on the marriage bonds of Jared Branson Jr. and John Branson in Patrick Co., Virginia. Rev. William Cloud was the first cousin of Daniel Cloud who married Elizabeth Branson, daughter of Lionel Branson and Rebecca Rogers. This is a very good clue about the ancestry of Jared Branson Sr.

Subject: [BRANSON] Jesse Mankin - surety for the Jared Branson family -Background
Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 11:50:12 -0600

Other than being a surety on the bonds of the marriages of the Jared Branson
children in Patrick CO, here is what is KNOWN about Jesse Mankins and his
family:

1.Jesse Testator Deed to Jonathan Harrold from Thomas Summer of
Stokes, 1809 in Patrick (another Testator was John HIATT)
2.Jesse is Bondsman for John Eaton who married Frances BURRUS 1809 in
Patrick
3.Jesse is on Jury 1812 Patrick
4.In deed book of Patrick Co of 1791-1801 is John Mankins and James
Mankins
5.reviewing the census of 1820 Patrick households of James Mankins b
1794/1804 and Jese b before 1775 we can conclude that James is the oldest
son already married and that 2 sons are still living at home - 1 born
1794/1804 and one born 1810 or after. William was born 1810 and Joel was
born 1800/1810.
6.In reviewing the census of 1830, James HH born 1780/1790 and Mary
born NC 1770/1780 with 2 males now 20/30. Jesse has apparently died between
1820 and 1830.

Mary the widow later lives with Euel Smith and Masey who must be a daughter.
Mary was born in NC and it is highly likely that whatever her maiden name is
she is associated with families in Stokes. Further since Jesse was testator
to 2 deeds by Thomas Summer of NC one might wonder what interest Jesse had
in these properties and if in fact his wife Mary might not been an heir to
what Thomas was transferring. I think the answer lies here:
http://www.billputman.com/Beals.pdf In the history of the Beals family,
Robert Sumner (a non- Quaker) married Phoebe Cannaday and she got disowned.
He later converted. Their son was Bowater Sumner
http://www.oz.net/~blueboyz/burris.htm who married Rebecca BURRIS. They
had children MARY and her brother THOMAS (Thomas married Hannah HIATT). So
it seems likely that Jesse Mankin was married to Mary Sumner - Thomas was
her brother.

On rootsweb a note is made about Jonathan Harrold "Jonathan Harrold is the
son of William Harrold and Frances Sturnam,
grandson of Jonathan Harrold and Catherine Hiatt, and great grandson of
Richard Harrold and Mary Beals."

That Jesse Mankin bonded the Branson marriages and also had in-laws - his
wife being the daughter of a son whose father was a Non-Quaker and converted
- does not support that there is a Quaker connection here.

William Mankin married Harriet. 5/25/1831 William Mankin married Harriett
Smith In Patrick.

1/19/1826 Nehemiah Daniel Jr married Kitty Mankin (known as Citty in one
transaction ) in Patrick. This was the daughter of Jesse Mankin.

Nehemiah Daniel Sr married Anna Lyon. Anna is likely part of the Lyon
family of Washington Co, VA and Patrick VA. In the deed book of 1791/1801
Patrick are Stephen and James Lyon. They own property on Russell Creek near
James Mankin. In the census of 1810 Washington appear Stephen Lyon born
1765/1785 and James Lyon b 1765/1785. These are the children of Colonel
James Lyon - a family that came from MARYLAND.
http://members.tripod.com/~jrichmon/lyon0070.htm

Nehemiah Daniel, Jr signed a deed of trust to John Scott in 1828 for the
benefit of Joseph MCMILLAN.

Zackariah LYON BRANSON and John Branson went from Charles Co, MARYLAND to
STOKES, NC in 1790 The Lyon family of Charles Co, MD married into the
Branson family of Charles Co, MD.

Other interesting facts: In the 1810 census there are 2 James Mankin listed
- in Charles Co, MD and Anne Arundel, MD. In 1850 a James Mankin born 1811
in VA is living in Baltimore, MD. In 1850 a John W. Mankin born 1812 VA in
living in Parke, IN (where the Absalom Branson clan moved)

John Eaton is probably the son of Joseph Eaton that appears in the 1782
Montgomery Co. Tax list.

Here is an interesting page of Revolutionary War testaments including
Christopher Eaton aka Christopher Valentine and Isham East - of the East
family of Patrick Co, VA. Note the relationship before Patrick with STOKES
county - which became Forsyth and was previously Surry.

PATRICK COUNTY COURT BOOK:
Dec 16,1819
Jesse Mankin appeared in Court & took the several oaths required by Law to be taken as a Justice of the Peace for this County and accordingly took his seat as such.

I have seen many comments on this family line, can anyone add to the line up of Jesse, James, John, William , and Hezekiah Mankin from Henry and Patrick Co, VA. I firmly believe that possibly 3 or 4 of them moved to Rutherford Co, TN by the 1820's. My main question is:
James b. 1796/1801, md to Lydia Hodge, and possibly another woman,(what was her name) died in 1852,who were his children?
Many have John's children and James's children inter-mingled, and when did Lydia Hodge die if James married again?

Hezekiah b. abt 1785/90, was he ever md. and with children?
He was very active in land dealings up to 1817 in Patrick Co, VA.

John b. 1763 md to Martha Kirby, who were all of his children , where did he die, and did all of his children come with him to TN (I have seen the listings online can someone confirm?).

Possibly lining up all of these different familys could tie in some loose "Mankin" children.

My ancestor is Jesse Mankin b. 1805 Patrick Co, VA-d. 1863 Greene Co, MO.
Many researchers think he belongs to William Mankin b. 1762 VA who md. Sarah Elizabeth Prater, but if this is so then who did Jesse W.- b. 1813 TN md. Sophia Jarrett, belong to ?

Since it would seem from the settlement of William's estate that his older son James became guardian of Jesse, along with his brothers Charles and William and that they were described as under the age of 14; my Jesse b. 1805 VA (per stated by him in his military records) he would have been 22 at the time of his father's death in 1827. Jesse W. would have only been 13/14 years old.

I think he belongs to either John b. 1763, or James (another brother from Patrick Co, who possibly came to TN ).

Who was William D. md to Nancy E (1850/1860 census) Bedford Co, TN ? How does he fit in ? And is there anyone out there who is working that line?

NO proof and of course just speculation on my part. If anyone has any new data or thougths on this please let me know.
And thanks for all the sharing on this forum. It is a great spot to be in touch with other researchers.

Does any one happen to know who John, James, and William Mankin are that is listed on the 1790 Personal Tax List for Henry County, Virginia?? They are not listed there in 1800.

These Mankin men may have connections to my William W. Mankin(s), b. ABT. May 10, 1781 in Maryland. Migrated to Wood County, [West] Virginia (1810 & 1820 census). In 1821 he and his family moved directly across the Ohio River into Washington County, Ohio.

The reason why I think they COULD be related is from naming patterns and migration patterns of close neighbors of my MANKIN(S) CLAN once they reached Wood Co. Several were from Loudon, and Fairfax Counties.

Also listed in the 1790 Personal Tax List for Henry Co., Virginia is a John Spencer and John Dillard. John Spencer married Ruth, d/o John Dillard. The Spencer's have ties to my Mankins line after they reached Wood Co., [West] Virginia.

Other possible ties to my Mankins' line that migrated to Wood county are the surnames of Lewis, Tomlinson, Tannever, Neal, and Creel. They may have all migrated together.

Article continued - "At one time, Port Tobacco rivaled Williamsburg and Philadelphia among the ports of the colonies, said Jay Lilly, president of the Soc. for the Restoration of Port Tobacco.... by the 1790's silt from neighboring farmland had filled in the river and made the port unreachable for large ships. Fire struck the fatal blow. In 1892, the courthouse was burned, but not before the town documents had been stacked on the lawn. Suspicion flew to neighbors in La Plata, who had been angling for more power since they acquired a railroad. If it was arson, it was not prosecuted and in the half cnetury that followed, wrote James Barbour in a booklet of town history, the historic village became a ghost town which almost compeltely buried its past.
What remains is idyllic. The impeccable Colonial homes are landscaped with weeping willos, spirea shrubs and cherry trees. Great blue herons flap slowly over the creek. (cont)
According to the article, "the land around Port Tobacco which in it's heyday had 80 buildings, three hotels and two newspapers, had produced signer of the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. After Abraham Lincoln's assassination, the Confederate sympathizers in town were said to have turned down large sums of money as they kept the where abouts of John Wilkes Booth secret. The furnishings of Dorothy Barbour's colonial living room - and even it's floorboards were once put on display in a Chicago museum....
The village still operates under a charter from 1888 that doesn't allow women to be elected officials, imposes a $1 tax on every dog ($5 for a female dog) and prohibits any person from allowing his swine to run at large within said village. They've never changed any law....they just don't enforce some.

John & Masa Mankins were my 5th great grandparents. Our family also says that Masa was full blood Delaware and I found this note several years ago but cannot remember where...

"According to Mrs. Dan Wofford of Jay, Oklahoma, an old family bible states the parents of Peter and his elder brother Walter were John and Masa Mankin."

Does anyone know of the where abouts of this bible???

Bottom of Form 2 I don't know where that Bible is, but I'd sure like to get a copy of the family pages in it! Peter and Walter's father, John, served with the Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War. I've heard and read in several places that their mother, Masa, was a Delaware Indian (branch of the Cherokee) and I did learn that particular group of native Americans did live in the area near Port Tobacco, MD. I don't know whether we'll get any sort of real proof of her heritage, however, unless it should be through mitochondrial DNA. Gale

My grandfather in law is looking for info on the mankin family. His Grandfather was Ephraim Pollock, b 1850 d 1912, he was the son of Stephen Bennett, b 1817 d 1878, now here is the question, was Stephen Bennett the son of John Mankin, b d , and was he the son of James Mankin, son of Tubman? If you have any questions please let us know. We are looking for any sons or daughters of James, John, Stephen?

Hi Shannon,

You may want to look at the following website for Mankin(s) family history:

www.geocities.com/heartland/garden/2706/

It still works, because I just tried it!

Tubman Mankins is my line.

I have information on the family of Jesse Mankins (c1770-bef1830). Probably born in VA and almost certainly died in Patrick Co., VA. He and wife Mary _____ had probably 7 children: James, John, Nancy, Sarah, Catherine, William, and Massey. Jesse was almost certainly descended from the Mankins family of Charles Co., MD but there is no proof that I know of. Send a message to my email address if think additional info would be usefel.

am interested in learning about your Jesse Mankin. I believe this Jesse may be the son of John and Massa, John son of Tubman. I was given this info many years ago by a fellow researcher who is now desceased, so I don't know how he made the jump from Jesse to John, however, I do find it interesting that Jesse had a daughter named Massey. Certainly bears looking into.
I am descended from Jesse's daughter Catherine "Kitty" who married Nehemiah Daniel, Jr. in 1826 in Patrick Co.
