About Jesse Veazey
In 1798 Jesse received a Headright grant of 659 acres in Greene County, GA. He was granted 133 acres of land in Hancock County, GA in 1799. Jesse and Sarah had eight or ten children, most of whom are listed in his estate records. Their son Jesse Hollingsworth Veazey, who was listed in the Guardianship records is recorded in LDS records as having married Leah Hall. There is also a Hancock County marriage bond for Jesse H Veazey and Leah Hall.
According to the History of Arkansas by Goodspeed, Jesse served seven years in the Revolutionary War. He was the express courier from General Washington to General Greene, before the battle and before the surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown. Jesse was shot at many times but escaped without injury and rode, in all, two days and the same horse 240 miles. He died in GA when he was about 60. He had accumulated a comfortable fortune as an agriculturist.
Jesse was a Baptist but belonged to no church. Sallie (Sarah) was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church until she married Jesse; she was then excluded from her church.
Eli Lincoln "Link" Veazey discovered estate records in Jones County, GA, dated about 1813. These records include Guardianship records for the minor children of Jesse and Sarah Peek and verifies the children who were not of age when Jesse died. This lineage differs from the chart shown on page 54 of the Pryor Gardner and His Descendants book. Sarah "Sallie" Peek Veazey moved to AL after the death of her husband, Jesse Veazey. Her will is on file in Will Book 2, page 8, Montgomery County, AL. She appointed her trusted friend, John Browning, as executor. Her will was witnessed by Francis J Browning, her sister-in-law. Other witnesses were William B Peak and John Cain. Sarah's maiden name was Peek (or Peak) and Nancy Cain married Zebulon Veazey. Was this all in the family?
Family tradition in the Eli Akins Veazey family is not in agreement with the Little Fertilizer Book by Lionel Lincoln Veazey. The family tradition agrees with this book from Jesse Veazey and Sarah Akins to the present. The discrepancy occurs in the parents of this Jesse, Jr. The family tradition is that Jesse, Jr, who married Sarah Akins, was the son of Jesse Sr, who married Sarah Peek. A chart on page re of the Pryor Gardner and Some of his Descendants book by John Veazey Chapman agrees with this tradition; however, it is incomplete in that the name of the first Jesse's wife is not shown.
Eli Lincoln "Link" Veazey, Jr tells Anne Veazey Davis that his aunt, Cornelia Jane Veazey, who married Charles A Rainwater, imparted this family tradition. There is a later writing in Cornelia Jane's hand that shows the first Jesse as having married Sarah Peek. One of the most compelling points of this family tradition as related by Link is the relationship to various family groups during his childhood and youth. They were not visiting relatives of the Pryor Gardner Veazey family group even though he can remember his father's reference to Cousin Pryor. (The Little Fertilizer Book came to Jackie V Butts from her mother's Veazey ancestors and not from her father's. Jackie's father is in the Pryor Gardner family.) Eli Lincoln Veazey family tradition:
1. John Veazey d. 1700 and Martha Broccus
2. James Veazey Sr 1675-1766 and Mary Mercer d 1766 (The term Sr was not applied to this James Veazey in original recorded documents. This term has been applied by his present day descendants.)
3. James Veazey Jr 1725-1789 and Elizabeth Hollingsworth Johnson 1727-1812 (He did not use Jr even though he was the son of James. No original record located to date has shown Jr used for him. There WAS a mystery James L Veazey who is covered with (16) James.)
- 4. (58) Jesse Veazey Sr 1762-1813 adn Sarah Peek
- 5. (359) Jesse Veazey Jr 1799-1852 and Sarah Adkins 1806-1821 (This Jesse did use the term Jr in a number of the original records in Greene County because he was six years younger than Jesse 1793-1857, son of Zebulon, who married his first cousin, Ruth Veazey. Jesse and Ruth are the parents of Lionel Lincoln Veazey.)
6. Eli Akins Veazey 1834-1891 married 1st Mary A Jackson; 2nd Josephine Jackson, Mary's sister.
7. Cornelia Jane Veazey 1856-1893 and Charles A Rainwater, a daughter of Eli Akins Veazey by first wife
7. Eli Lincoln Veazey Sr 1882-1936 and Ellie Rebecca Alford 1891-1948, a son by second wife
- This is the difference between family tradition and that recorded in the Little Fertilizer Book. The Jesse who married Sarah Akins used the term Jr in Greene County records as covered under (359) Jesse. I have not seen a record where the Jesse who married Sarah Peak used the term Sr.
Link believes (359) Jesse Veazey Jr is the (165) Jesse H (Hollingsworth) Veazey shown in guardianship and estate records of the Hesse and Sarah Peek. It is complicated by the fact that this couple did in fact have a son named Jesse Hollingsworth Veazey who married Leah Hall 13FEB1817 as shown by Hancock County marriage record and recorded in LDS records, is the Jesse, son of Thomas, son of our mystery James Veazey Jr who married Ann Johnson.
