Disputed Parents

No sources have been found to support these parents.

Joan's alleged father John Coleson

Disputed Spouse and Children

Because the name Wood/Atwood is very common, assumptions are frequently made connecting Wood/Atwood persons with others of the same name who are not closely related.

The husband of Joan Coleson, whose name was John has been associated with the Massachusetts immigrant John Atwood. However his wife was Ann (Lee).
Neither of them were the parents of Henry Wood or Stephen Wood

  • John Atwood/Wood (b 1614) Baptizes St Martin's Church, C A Atwood and E F Atwood.

Harman Atwood/Wood and John Atwood/Wood Jr., are known to be sons of John Atwood, the leather seller, and Joan (Coleson ) Atwood. The names and dates of birth and baptism records match them to their parents. When Harman and his brother John Jr. came to Plymouth, they were adults. They did not need support of their parents. They bought property on their own. The brothers, Stephen and Henry bought adjoining property with Harmon and John Jr. on at least three occasions. C A Atwood and E F Atwood believed that because of their ages, (all born between 1614-1620), and close family relationship between the brothers, that they were brothers. E F Atwood says "I concede that they are brothers." source: Ye Atwood Annals. Though no paper trail had been found that links the brothers to their parents in Plymouth, MA, Harman, John Jr., Stephen, and Henry Atwood/Wood lived near their parents. Stephen's daughter Abigail (Atwood) Pratt married Johnathan Pratt, the son of her grandfather's neighbor, Joshua Pratt. Joshua Pratt took the oath of "free men" on the same day as John Wood/Atwood. And Stephen's wife, Abigail (Dunham) Atwood, was the daughter John Dunham, another neighbor of Stephen's parents. Stephen and his brothers, Henry and John Jr would have visited their parents, or they could not have met their spouses.

The family stayed close together. And deeds show that the family and in-laws were neighbors. Citation: 7 Nov 1635 Plymouth Colony Records Vol. 1:46 prove that John Atwood bought 3x2 ac. land the same day and adjoining to land John Dunham bought.
