About Joan Caroline Moncur
Predicted mtDNA haplogroup U2c1-direct descendant of Catharina van Malabar SM.
Youngest daughter, nearly died of Dyptheria as a baby. The doctor had written her off,but mother Christina, typically stubborn by her own admission, was having none of that. She sterilised a feather over a flame & kept baby Joan's airway clear-and it worked. Joan was reputedly as 'stubborn as a mule' according to her son-in-law,and Christina once said to Joan's children that they were all stubborn, just like grandma-so it seems to be a family inheritance! At 15 Joan went horseriding with a boyfriend-unfortunately,he neglected to warn her that her mount bolted when it got near to the stables-which it promptly did, throwing Joan off which caused a lifelong pinched nerve in her neck making it difficult for her to lift her arms for long-doctors thought it was a shoulder problem. She needed help hanging up washing, curtains & so on & only drove automatics as a result. She was generally cheerful and a good hostess-in contrast to her moody spouse and would pursue unconventional interests if the inclination took her. She would often not bother arguing excessively with her children & in her own words, let them bump their heads for themselves! At the same time, the cheerfulness was sometimes a bit of an act.. When with older sister Pam(Poppy Anna),the retort "Oh nonsense,Joan!" would sometimes be heard,as she tended to make flippant, sweeping statements. Pam,with her razor-sharp intellect, was not about to let that kind of thing pass quietly. For all that,Joan was quite a belle-there were many suitors after she was widowed. She said her she married the first man she couldn't push around-Malcolm Knox.
