About Malcolm Knox
Worked at Old Mutual Head Office in Pinelands,Cape Town for most of his career in data processing on massive mainframe computers-knew 4 computer languages.Quite a Renaissance man-witty,a keen sportsman,mathematically gifted,musical-graduated from piper to drum major in Cape Town Caledonian Society band(even though actually only 25% Scots),artistic/creative-a good designer and speaker,not to mention a great joker/tease-if not in his crabby mood-generally reserved for home!After his death,his widow Joan said he was actually very shy-the jokiness was a cover(and he could be embarrassing at times-like asking for a pork pie at King David Golf Course[strictly Kosher],then asking for a ham sandwich upon being sniffily informed that they don't do pork,being Kosher!).His mother was so hard that he didn't tell her as a child after cutting his knee badly-she wasn't much better as a mother-in-law/grandmother.Rather strict as a father-only relaxed when his children were in late teens.Son Alistair noticed he himself got annoyed when his own child hurt himself-but that was out of concern-but it doesn't come across as being very empathetic!He did not necessarily show it often,being of that generation,but he was fond of his children,in hindsight they don't know how he put up with all 4 of them on long car trips.Every Christmas & birthday he would get Mad magazine & Giles(British newspaper cartoon) annual-his favourites.To his kids' surprise,he really enjoyed Monty Python's movie King Arthur & the Holy Grail-really whacky British humour at the time.Definitely not someone who suffered fools gladly,and quick on the uptake he was not one to mince words,even under the critical gaze of senior management at work,so his insights were valued.His death followed a recent promotion-2 people replaced him in his previous post-so his workload may have become rather heavy,although around that time rather too many senior managers at the firm succumbed to heart attacks-it was not as fashionable then as it is now to be careful about coronary health in middle age.
