  • BURIAL Old North Cemetery, Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA

Joanna Sheaffe, widow of Dr. Edmund Sheaffe, was born between Jan 11 1575 and Jan 10 1576, in Beckenham, Kent, England and died Aug 1, 1659 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Her parents were Nicholas Jordan and Joan Croft [who 1st married Oliver Nye ( Ney)]. She emigrated with her family from England to Boston in 1635 and died in Guilford, August 1, 1659.

Joanna 1st married [5] on May 17, 1596 at St. George Church, in Beckham, Kent, England, John Kitchell.[1] Her 2nd marriage in 1602 at Cranbrook, Kent, England was with Rev Edmund Sheaffe.[3] Edmund Sheafe of Cranbrook in his 1625 will, mentions wife Joane; and his wife's five children, who have three husbands; his wife's brother Mr. Nicholas Jordan Esq; and Robert Kitchell, wife's eldest son and Smallhope Bigge to be overseers.[2]

His will dated November 1, 1625 in Cranfield gives Joane, his wife, full right to distribute his furniture and other personal items to their living children. He also mentioned son-in-law - Richard Sharpy, younger sons - Harmon & Jacob, eldest son - Thomas, daughter - Joane, youngest daughter - Mary. Nicholas Jordan, Esqr., brother of his wife, and Robert Kitchell (Edmund's son-in-law, Joane's son as overseers of his estate.

Joanne probably immigrated with Edmund's daughter Margaret (Scheaffe) & husband, Robert Kitchell (her son), her daughter, Joanna & husband, William Crittenden, and her son, Jacob with Rev. Henry Whitfield's company in the good ship, "Arabella", which left London on April 26, 1639 and was the first ship to sail into New Haven harbor. The party settled in Guilford where she died.

Notes

The last discovery confirms the belief expressed in my article that the Joan Lake who married Edmund Sheafe on 17 Oct. 1610 was his third wife and identical with Joan (Jordan) Kitchell, which would mean that she had an interim husband named Lake. Her four Kitchell children were Robert the emigrant, Frances who m. George Nash, Elizabeth who m. Thomas Ruck (also emigrants), and Joan. Since the three witnesses of Edmund Sheafe's will were George Nash, Thomas Ruck and Alexander Weller, of whom the first two were husbands of step-daughters, it was therefore surmised that Weller might be husband of Joan Kitchell. It now seems probable that she died, but that Weller's wife Joan Lake was daughter of Joan (Jordan) Kitchell by her second (Lake husband). Probably there was also a Lake son, to account for the five children mentioned. by Donald L. Jacobus [2]

The Sheafe family book by Watkins reports that Joan's 1st husband was Unknown Downe of Challock (also that she was the sister of Nicholas Jordan).[2]

Rev. Henry Whitfield's wife, Dorothy (Sheaffe) Whitfield was the cousin of Rev. Edmond Sheaffe.
