Biography

Birth and Parentage

Born: By 1593, based on her marriage in 1613.

Proof of her English origins and parentage has recently been published in The American Genealogist.[2] She was the daughter of Thomas Gentleman of Southwold and his wife Christian Cock. She was named in the will of her father at which time she was unmarried and under age 18. She was also named in the will of John Cock as Joan Herrington wife Robert Herrington, along with all of her other siblings.

Previous suggestions that she was christened 5 July 1603 in Southwold, Suffolk, England, the daughter of William Jentilman and his wife Agnes. have been proven incorrect.[3]

English Origins

  • Leslie Mahler, FASG, Robert Battle, FASG, Three Great-Migration Gentlewomen: Sisters Margaret (Gentleman) Ibrook, Susan (Gentleman)(Hunter) Hollingsworth, and Joan (Gentleman)(Herrington)Youngs of Southwold, Suffolk, and Massachusetts), in The American Genealogist (TAG). • Joan Gentleman. Born say 1593 (based on marriage). She married first Robert Herrington on 7 March 1613 in Southwold; she married second Rev. John Youngs on 25 July 1622 in Covehithe, Suffolk, England; Joan died 5 Oct 1631 in Covehithe, Suffolk, England

Marriages

  1. On 7 March 1613 she married as her first husband Robert Herrington, born about 1595 and died in 1622. This Robert Herrington was the son of another Robert Herrington [I], who had been bailiff of Southwold for many years. [2]
  2. July 25, 1622 in Southwold, England to John Youngs (about 1598 in Reydon, England - February 24, 1672 Southold, New York)

Children

  1. Col. John Youngs (April 10, 1623 in Suffolk, England - April 12, 1698 in Southold, New York), married [1] Mary Gardner; married [2] Anne Wines Nichols Elton Tooker.

Joan and John were parents of at least John and Thomas, and possibly more of John's children. Probably died before 1630

John Yonges in turn married Joan Harris, widow of "Richard Palgrave of Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk. This marriage is estimated to have occurred between 1630 and 1637. [7] It therefore be inferred that John's first wife Joan was dead by 31 Dec, 1629. She possibly died circa 1628 in Southwold Parish, County Suffolk, England.

Joan's Children by her two Husbands

  1. Robert Herrington, baptized at Southwold, County Suffolk, 1 October 1616, [2]. No records have been found of this Robert in England. It is possible that he died as an infant, even before his father. It is possible that he lived and accompanied his mother into her new marriage with Rev. John Yonges. It is possible that he grew to manhood and became the Robert Harrington who appeared in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1644. All of these are possible -- and none of them are proved.
  2. Col. John Yonges b. b 10 Apr 1623
  3. Thomas Yonges b. 1 May 1625
  4. Rachael Yonges b. c 1627

“ Robert Harrington I (ca. 1595-1622) was born in England. He married Joan Jentilman (1598-1638) on March 7, 1613. who was born in England. (Manuscript Parish Register Of Southwold, Suffolk, England marriage record of). He died in England in 1622 and she married John Younges the same year, July 24, 1622. She had at least one more child by Younges and died young in England. Reverend John Younges emigrated to America and was an original founder of Southold, Long Island, New York. He founded the First Church (then Congregational, later Presbyterian) in Southold, Long Island, New York, where he was the minister until his death there on February 24, 1671/2, aged 74 years.

So we see that although Joan was alive and ready to come to America in 1637, she was dead when John Younges actually arrived at Southold Long Island (in the summer of 1639). I cannot find any record of which ship Younges actually sailed on. I checked all published passenger lists between 1637 and 1639. Robert Harrington II may have come over sooner, of course. He was 21 years old in 1637. However I cannot find him on any passenger list between 1630 and 1640. Many passenger ship lists have never been published.

Robert Harrington II, son of Joan Jentilman and Robert Harrington I, was baptized Oct. 1, 1616 in Southwold, Suffolk, England. He came to America before 1644 because he is listed as a proprietor of Watertown in 1644. Robert Harrington, married October 1, 1648, Susanna, daughter of John GEORGE. They had 13 children.
