About Joanna Burroughs

John Burroughs married twice. His first wife is thought to be Joanna Jessup,[3] whom he wed in Stamford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut. They had four children: Joanna about 1641, Jeremiah about 1642, Joseph about 1644 and Mary about 1649. His second wife was Elizabeth (Pettit) Reed, widow of Thomas Reed, and possibly the daughter of Thomas and Christian (Mellowes) Pettit. John and Elizabeth had a son John Jr. b. 1665 at Newtown.

John Burroughs of Newtown, Queens Co, NY, left a will dated 2 Jul 1678. The will mentioned his wife, son Jeremiah, son Joseph, son John (a minor not yet 21), daughters Joanna Reeder and Mary Burroughs.[5]

His son, Jeremiah Burroughs, was executor, witnesses were Thomas Petit and Gershom Moore. An inventory of the estate of John Burroughs was taken on 29 Aug 1678 in Queens Co, NY.

Uncertain Name

No primary record has been found to name the first wife of John Burroughs. Because John was named "brother-in-law" in the will of Edward Jessup, she was most likely his sister. Some authors, like Jacobus, state only that she was a Jessup or, more precisely, a daughter of John Jessup.<ref name="FooF">Jacobus, vol. 1, pages 336-337 available through American Ancestors (subscription site) or for free through Family Search</ref> Jacobus later named her Joanna,<ref>Jacobus (1943), Page 215</ref> but it is unclear what additional information, if any, allowed this determination. Torrey also names her "Joanna".<ref name="Torrey">Torrey: Vol. 1, Page 255</ref>

Dates

There is a range of opinion about her birth and death.
She is said variously to have been born about 1617 in England; about 1617 in Newtown, Queens, New York; about 1620 in Fairfield, Connecticut; about 1625 in Fairfield, Connecticut; about 1630 in Fairfield, Connecticut; and about 1635 in England She is variously said to have died in Newtown, Queens, New York in 1660, or 1664.

Narrative

Joanna was the daughter of John Jessup and ]Joanna Kerrick?? She married John Burroughs probably in Stamford, Connecticut by 1641.<ref name="Torrey" /> They had four children: Joanna,Jeremiah, Joseph and Mary. Joanna's husband John was named "brother-in-law" in the will of her brother Edward Jessup. Edward also names "cousin" Joanna Burroughs, presumably the daughter of this Joanna, so in modern terminology she would be his niece.<ref name="FooF">Jacobus, vol. 1, page 337 available through American Ancestors (subscription site) or for free through Family Search</ref>

Research Notes

Sources that list her death date as 20 November 1679 are clearly confusing Joanna with John Burroughs's second wife Elizabeth -- letters of administration were granted on Elizabeth's estate to her son-in-law Samuel Moore on that very date. Presumably sources that list only the year 1679 are making the same error.
