The daughter of Rev. Edmond Sheaffe, and his second wife, Joanne (Jordan) Sheaffe, she married first, William Crittenden, in 1635 and second, Abraham Cruttenden in 1665. Joanna married Major William Chittenden, about 1630, probably in England. They had ten known children who are all listed below with the exception of their oldest daughter, Elizabeth Chittenden Wright. After the death of Joanna's first husband, William Chittenden, she married again to Abraham Cruttenden II on 31 May 1665 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. Their marriage was short as she died less than three months later.

Joanna Sheaffe was sister of Dorothy, wife of Rev. Henry Whitfield, leader of the colony expedition to the new world. Under her descendant, Henry W. Chittenden, husband of Griffing, son of Abraham, has in his notes in the Chittenden book, "priding himself upon his ancestral blood, especially in the Sheaffe line, which he claimed to be 'allied to royalty,' going back to the lines of the kings of Scotland.
