Identity of First Wife of John Howland

After Joanna Shove married John Howland in 1704, Yet Mercy Shove made her home with her sister Joanna. The records of the division and title to parts of the North Purchase have been preserved as explained below in quotation. May 14, 1706, the said land was laid out to the only surviving daughters of Rev. George Shove, who were Yet Mercy and her sister Joanna (Shove) Howland, the wife of John³ (John², Pilgrim John¹) Howland. The part for Elizabeth (who had died) went to her widower, Malachi Halloway. Sarah died in 1693. Mary died before May 14, 1706. May 16, 1706, three acres of meadowland were laid out for Joanna (Shove) Howland and Yet Mercy Shove "the above heirs."[1]

"The records of the division and title to parts of the North Purchase have been preserved. In the division or choice of areas, the word "Pitch" is used apparently with the ancient meaning, "To fix one's choice; settle or decide; to choose." May 14, 1706, the said land was laid out to Joanna Shove and her sister Yet Mercy Shove, as apparently, the other sisters had died (North Purchase Proprietors Records, Vol. I, Page 57)".[1]

"20 May 1714. Josiah Howland for what Land is due Joannah the wife of John Howland whose maiden name was Shove, Pitches to take it Joyning to what he hath already Pitch for that is due to his wife between the first Minister's Lot and Briant's Lott." (Vol. V, Page 20, North Purchase and Proprietors Records).

"17 May 1715. John Howland and Josiah Howland May the 17, 1715 Pitches for what Land that may conveniently Have Joyning to what they have already Pitcht for near the ministry Lott on the sixty acre division." (Vol. V, Page 34, North Purchase Proprietors Records).

The above identifies Joanna Shove, a sister of Yet Mercy Shove, as the first wife of John³ (John², John¹ Howland of Mayflower). This John³ Howland made his will Feb. 8,1737-8.[2] There were two daughters, Mary and Joanna, by his 1st wife, who were single. Concerning them, he made the following special bequest: "to my Other two Daughters Mary and Joanna all the household goods that came by their own Mother to be Equally Divided between them."[1]

Issues

Their children's name and date of birth can be located at Barnstable Town Record Volume 1 Part B on page 417 as follows:[3]

Children of John Howland and his first wife, (Joanna Shove), all born in Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay: George Howland, b. 30 December 1705. Hannah Howland, b. 2 February 1708. Mary Howland, b. 11 August 1711. Joannah Howland, b. 8 January 1715. Death

Unfortunately, the date of her death had not gone into the record of Barnstable Vital Record. However, it is possible to ascertain when she died.

"This Indenture made the Thirteenth day of July in ye Third year of ye Reign of our Sovereign Lord George {?} great Brittain ye King annoqe Domini 1717 Between John Philips of Taunton North Purchass in ye County of [Bri]stol in New England Yeoman on the one part a[n]d Josiah Howland of Bristol in the County of Bristol aforesd Blacksmith and Yet Mercy his wife on the other part Witnesseth that whereas Mr George Shove late of Taunton deceased Did by his last will & testament did give and bequeath to his daughters one whole share of land in said Taunton North Purchass and the sd John Philips hath by good and Suffenent Deeds well Executed Purchased the one half of the whole share of land and the other halfe doth {?} belong to the sd Josiah Howland and Yet mercy his wife as she is the onely surviveing heire of the said share of land... Entered July 23d : 1717 By John Cary Recordr." (Bristol County, Deed Records, Book 10, Part 2, p. 732 - 733).

It indicates that Johanna (Shove) Howland died before this record of final dispersion of land on July 13, 1717, because Yet Mercy is the only surviving heir of the share of land.

It can be ascertained that Joanna (Shove) Howland died sometime after her last child, Joannah Howland born on January 8, 1715, and before the deed was recorded on July 13, 1717.
