About Joanna Thing

Biography

Jonathan Thing was probably born in England in 1621; in 1667 he gave his age as 46 in a deposition.[1] He likely came to Massachusetts Bay as an indentured servant or apprentice. On May 16, 1644 he was ordered by the Massachusetts Bay Court "to continue his time with Henry Ambrose."[2]

Jonathan had several interactions with judicial authorities. In 1641 he was brought before the Massachusetts General Court. He was sentenced to "bee severely whiped here (at Boston) and & Ipswich" and fined to pay 20 lbs to Samuel Greenfield, father of the seven year old girl he "ravished."[3] In 1655 he was ordered to post a bond to ensure his good behavior. His infractions were "for telling a lie...for being a common disturber of order...for serving a notice on the Lord's Day...for speaking discornfully of the Court..."[1]

Jonathan was one of the early settlers in Maine. On Jul 4, 1653 his name appeared on a list of "Wells Mens Names"[4] He was one of six men there who voluntarily submitted to the governance of Massachusetts Bay. His fellow inhabitants sympathized with Rev. John Wheelwright who had been sentenced to banishment for defying religious authorities there.[1] In Nov of 1660 the town of Wells, Maine granted him 100 acres of land.[5]

By 1654 Jonathan Thing and Joanne Wadleigh were married (she married 2nd Bartholomew Tipping), probably at Exeter.[6] He was an early settler there when it was governed by Massachusetts and a selectman beginning in 1658.[1] He was given a land grant of 40 acres in 1660.[7]

Jonathan died in Exeter in 1670. In 1674 a record of Norfolk deeds reflect that "'whereas Jonathan Thing died suddenly Joanna his widow and Jonathan Jr.' may sell his land."[1]
