About Jochem Anthony Portugese
Baptism record: 1643 Jul 05; Anthony Portuges Neger; Jochem; Emanuel
Literate son of freed slaves:
• http://www.common-place.org/vol-03/no-04/new-york/ "Well aware of the unpredictability that shadowed the lives of non-Europeans in the Dutch city, free Africans attempted to safeguard their children through labor contracts, such as the one made by Maria Portugies for her daughter to be a household servant, and apprenticeships. Susanna Anthony Roberts, a free African acting as guardian of her minor brother, negotiated an apprenticeship agreement for him that mandated that he be taught reading and writing. Unable to write herself, she yearned to equip her brother with the tools of literacy."
" Family responsibility was not only dictated by law. After the death of the parents of Jochem Anthony Robberts, his sister and guardian Susanna a free Negro, apprenticed him to Wolfert Webber for three years, during which time Jochem was to receive food and clothing and to be taught to read and write ." ~• This was probably in the late 1660's or early 70's
