Accident No. 18. — May 22nd. This accident ocurred at the 40th level south of No. 5 shaft, Calumet branch of the Calumet & Hecla mine, by which John Edward Orajarvi lost his life.

An inquest was held before Justice Fisher.

John Grossio, a witness produced, sworn and examined, upon said inquest, upon his oath says: "I work at Calumet Mine, No. 5 shaft, tramming. I knew the deceased he worked with the same party as I. Was with him at the time of the accident, yesterday morning between 3 and 4 o'clock, at the 40th level south side of No. 5 shaft, Calumet. He was pinching down the rock from the dirt pile, and I was behind him filling the car. There was a rock on the top of the pile and 1 told him to look out for that rock, and while he was pinching, that rock fell and struck his crow-bar on one end and knocked the end he was holding against his abdomen. I told him that he came very near being badly hurt. He walked to the shaft himself. We were working near the shaft."

Dr. E. H. Pomeroy, testified as follows: "I am one of the practicing physicians at the Calumet & Hecla hospital. Rupture of the intestine was the cause of death caused by the blow. There was no external mark of injury, except a slight mark, a mere scratch, no discoloration, no swelling. The pain was so severe and so unyielding to ordinary remedies that we felt there was serious external injury, and as in a few hours he began to grow rapidly worse, we thought there was a possibility that by opening the abdominal cavity, something might be done to relieve him. Upon opening into the abdominal cavity we found that the intestine was ruptured and the contents of the bowels poured out into the abdominal cavity and death resulted from that."

The jury returned the following verdict: We find that John Edward Orajarvi came to his death on the 22nd day of May, 1899, at the 40th level, south of No. 5 shaft, Calumet Branch of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, by being struck in the abdomen by a crow-bar. while in the act of prying down a rock."

Onnettomuus nro 18. — 22. toukokuuta. Tämä onnettomuus tapahtui Calumet & Hecla -yhtön Calumet-kaivoksessa tasolla 40, etelään kuilusta nro 5, ja siinä John Edward Orajarvi menetti henkensä.

Kuolinsyyntutkinnan johti tuomari Fisher.

John Grossio, paikalle haettu todistaja valan vannottuaan sanoi seuraavaa: "Työskentelen Calumetin kaivoksen kuilussa nro 5 vaunumiehenä ("tramming"). Tunsin vainajan koska hän työskenteli samassa ryhmässä kanssani. Olin hänen kanssaan onnettomuuden tapahtuessa eilen aamuyöllä kello 3 ja 4 välillä, tasolla 40, etelään kuilusta nro 5. Hän oli kampeamassa lohkareita alas kasasta ja minä olin hänen takanaan täyttämässä vaunua. Kasan päällä oli lohkare ja minä kehotin häntä olemaan varovainen sen kanssa, ja hänen kammetessaan se lohkare irtosi, osui rautakangen toiseen päähän jolloin toinen pää iskeytyi hänen vatsaansa. Sanoin että oli lähellä ettei hän loukkaantunut vakavasti. Hän käveli kuilulle omin jaloin. Työkohde oli lähellä kuilua."

Tohtori E. H. Pomeroy, todisti seuraavasti: "Olen yksi Calumet & Hecla -sairaalan lääkäreistä. Kuolinsyynä oli iskusta aiheutunut suolen repeämä. Ei ollut muita ulkoisia vamman merkkejä kuin pieni jälki, pelkkä naarmu ; ei mustelmaa eikä turpoamista. Kipu oli niin kova ja hellittämätön, ettei normaalit lievityskeinot tehonneet, ja siten arvelimme kyseessä olevan vakavan vamman. Kun muutaman tunnin sisällä hän meni huonommaksi, ajattelimme, että avaamalla vatsaontelon voisimme jotenkin häntä auttaa. Leikkauksessa näimme suolen revenneen ja suolen sisällön purkautuvan vatsaonteloon, ja kuolema seurasi siitä."

Valamiehistö päätyi seuraavaan ratkaisuun: 'Me toteamme että John Edward Orajarvi sai surmansa 22.5.1899 Calumet & Hecla -yhtiön Calumet-kaivoksessa tasolla 40, etelään kuilusta nro 5 malmikiviä irrottaessaan saatuaan rautakangesta iskun vatsaansa."
