About Johan Pieter Hardick, SV/PROG - 1 RSA

HARDICK FIRST GENERATION (A) Progenitor number 1 Introduction Only the following information on the “HARDICK” surname is available from the Genealogy Institute of South Africa. (GISA)

HARDICK (X - Married to, * - Born, ≈ - baptized)

Johann Peter Hardick from Hamburg, Germany x Cape Town 27.2.1820 Christina Petronella DEMPERS ≈ 27.7.1788 b1 Johanna Hermina * 3.6.1811 ≈ Cape Town 12.9.1813 x Cape Town 21.9.1828 Paul Michiel BESTER b2 Johan Pieter * 17.8.1818 ≈ Cape Town 27.2.1820, Messenger “togryer” x Cape Town 13.11.1848 Christina Petronella WASSERFALL xx Cape Town 30.7.1855 Johanna Susanna ISAAKSE b3 Christina Petronella ≈ Lutheran Church 31.10.1824 b4 Maria Catharina ≈ Lutheran Church 6.5.1827 x Michiel Nicolaas Johannes GYSELMAN v. Amsterdam X - Married to, * - Born, ≈ - baptized I am married to a Hardick lady. My goal was to attach her family to the tree father, Johann Peter Hardick. The problem was that the family, as in my Taljaard family and many other families could not supply me with information to link me upwards in the Hardick tree to the father of the tree. I only had the GISA information to work from. I went to the Western Cape Archives at 72 Roeland Street, Cape Town and Iustitia, Parade Street, Cape Town and looked at all the death notices or any information on any Hardick member and with the hope that the death notice will mention the parents of the deceased. In most of the death notices I observed, I found the surviving spouse only wrote there where the parents are to be identified, “deceased”. The first death notice I was looking for was the tree father and found it.

A1 Johan Pieter Hardick

Johan Pieter Hardick (Tree Father number one) Birth: Feb 11 1775, Hamburg, Germany In the picture on the left, is possibly what Cape Town harbor looked like in about 1810 when Johan Pieter Hardick immigrated to Cape Town, from Germany. (Photo with the compliments of Western Cape Archives) The Battle of Blaauwberg, also known as the Battle of Cape Town, fought near Cape Town on Jan 8 1806, was a small but significant military engagement. It established British rule in South Africa, which was to have many ramifications during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The British forces occupied South Africa until Aug 13 1814, when the Netherlands ceded the colony to Britain as a permanent possession. This was the time when Johan Pieter Hardick immigrated to Cape Town, still a Cape Colony until it was incorporated into the Union of South Africa on May 31, 1910.

Reference of Death Notice: Death notices at Western Cape Archives, 72 Roeland Street, Cape Town, number 1749 M000 06/6/47 140. The death notice, photo on the left, reveals the following: GISA information shows his name as Johann Peter. His wife Christina Petronella filled in this death notice and records his name as Johan Pieter. All his family down line the tree spells their name Johan Pieter Hardick Senior. We accept thus this spelling instead of spelling from GISA. Date of death: Mar 10 1849. Johan died after 73 years, 10 months and 27 days which makes his date of birth Feb 11, 1775. He was married to Christina Petronella Hardick (born DEMPERS) and his children (as mentioned below) are stated on the death Notice. His wife filled in the death notice and wrote something which caught my attention. When we look at the death Notice of Father of the Hardick tree, his four children’s age at that stage in 1849, Johanna Hermina BESTER (born Hardick) B1 is 38 years of age, Johan Pieter B2 is 31 years of age, Christina Petronella SMIT (born Hardick) B3 is 25 years of age and Maria Catharina GYSELMAN (born Hardick) is 22 years of age. It states above that Tree Father has left no property. He stays at the residence of Hermanus WASSERFALL, a 73 year old poor and a retired man. In the above photo it states that he was buried "AT THE EXPENSE OF THE LUTHEREN CHURCH CONGREGATION IN CAPE TOWN". The ages of the children range from 22 to 38 years. Why did the Lutheran Church pay for the funeral? Could no one in the family help the tree father financially to contribute to the funeral of their dad? Today it is easy for us to think this way and ask questions, but life was tough in 1849. One just had to survive day by day. Down the line his great grandson, Johan Pieter Hardick, AB2C1D2, at age of 25 opens with Hermanus Johannes WASSERFALL, possibly a second cousin, the funeral business (Wasserfall & Hardick Funeral Services). Somehow this great grandson makes up for what his family could not do as he then gets involved with the funerals of all his Hardick family down the line. Johan Pieter died at the Residence of Hermanus WASSERFALL, top of St John Street, Cape Town. Johan Pieter immigrated to Cape Town about 1810 and fell in love with his partner Christina Petronella DEMPERS. In the relationship, two children were born, Johanna Hermina B1 (born 3.6.1811, Baptized Cape Town 12.9.1813, Lutheran Church) and Johan Pieter B2 (born 17.8.1818, Baptized, Cape Town, Lutheran Church, 27.2.1820). On the day of the Baptism of Johan Pieter B2, tree father married on 27.2.1820, Cape Town Christina Petronella DEMPERS. Christina Petronella was born about Jan 1788 and baptized on Jul 27, 1788 in Cape Town. Two more daughters were born after their marriage B3 Christina Petronella (baptized Oct 10 1824, Lutheran Church) and B4 Maria Catharina (baptized 6.5.1827 Lutheran Church). In the photo here under is what the House of assembly looked like in 1849, what Cape town looked like in 1849, Table Mountain and it’s green slopes, the day that Christina as the surviving spouse (Widow), signs the death notice of her Husband Johan Pieter Hardick Mar 10, 1849.
