Johan George Prins (1945 - 2007)

Brief overview:

Johan (61), a farmer from Somer Farm, Mohlabe, Groberlsdal, Limpopo on G8 farm, was shot dead with a shotgun on 19th January 2007.

This shotgun along with Prins’s .22 rifle, a 303 rifle, a 9mm pistol and five fake ID books were found by police in the roof of of the house of implicated Home Affairs Official Aubrey Mohlabe.

These firearms were linked to another farm attack which took place near Witbank April last year. Mohlabe was arrested and remained in custody until his hearing on 14th February.

They poisoned Prins's dog then overpowered Prins and his wife. Prins was shot in the back and died.

  • “Two revolvers were stolen from the safe, Prins’s Fiat Uno and R2000 in cash,” said provincial police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi.

  • Aubrey Mohlabe was arrested in his office 24th January 2007
  • When the police searched his house, they came across the murder weapon, Prins' .22 pistol, a 303 rifle and a 9mm pistol. All the firearms were hidden in the house's roof, says Capt. Manie van Zyl from the police's provincial detection unit. Some of the firearms have also been positively linked to a farm attack that took place near Witbank in April 2006.
  • The police also came across five suspected forged ID books in Mohlabe's house.

  • Aubrey Mohlabe, a personnel officer from the Department of Internal Affairs in Witbank briefly appeared in court because of the murder of Johan Prins.
  • He remained in custody and the case has been adjourned until early February for further investigation.
  • The three men accused of killing the elderly were denied bail. Referee Moshwane (44), Jomo Thoma (29), and Aubrey Mohlabe (49), were to go on trial on 5 June on charges of murder, armed robbery, car theft and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
