About Mayor Johann F Ehrenberg

Johann Ehrenberg was the Bürgermeister (mayor) of Burkardroth, Wollbach, u. Zahlbach from 1929 to 1935 - the three villages are so close together that you can't tell where one begins and the other ends. He was apparently a very strict disciplinarian, as even today our Ehrenberg relatives still in Burkardroth remember him that way and when their children are being mean they say "Don't be a Johann!"

Johann Ehrenberg, born on October 27, 1873 in Zahlbach House No. 35, learned the bakery trade and took over their parents' property with his wife Franziska. For this they had to pay Franz Kirchner marks. On December 13, 1898, Johann Ehrenberg purchased the small house at number 69 next to his property for 600 marks from the widow Theresia Kleinhenz, who had moved to Zahlbach 33 with her second husband Michael Wolf. Johann Ehrenberg, who, in addition to working in his bakery, also worked as a butcher at home slaughterhouses, achieved dignity and honor in Burkardroth. In 1929, after a tough election campaign against the incumbent mayor Kilian Höchemer, he was elected as the new mayor. Even before he was deposed as mayor by the National Socialists as a non-loyal mayor, Johann Ehrenberg announced his resignation from the office of first mayor on June 3, 1935. Emil, the son of Johann and Franziska Ehrenberg, born on February 20, 1910, who passed his journeyman's examination in 1928 as the intended heir to the bakery, was killed in action in the Second World War on January 4, 1945 in Hungary. His wife Emma, née Grom, took over the business on January 1st, 1949 and, after Johann Ehrenberg died on December 8th, 1951, had to take her journeyman's examination in Bad Kissingen in order to be able to continue running the bakery business. On March 22, 1965, Anton, the son of Emma Ehrenberg, born on July 13, 1938, took over the bakery with his wife Elfriede, née Wagner, from Gfäll, and passed his master's examination on November 12, 1969. Their son Emil, born on June 1st, 1960, is the current owner of the bakery business. As the youngest in his master class, he passed the master's examination on March 5, 1983 and took over the business with his wife Maria, née Gessner, from Großwenkheim, in 1989.

Johann and Franziska had 15 children, two of whom died in childhood. A son died in World War II
Russia. Four children immigrated to the United States; Bertha, Franz, Anton, and 'Lina'.
