BIOGRAPHY Johann Ernst Anton was born 27 December 1675, the only child of Freiherr Wilhelm von Schaffgotsch and Eva Maria von Zedlitz. On 23 July 1697 in Prague, Johann Ernst married Gräfin Maria Elisabeth von Waldstein, only child of Graf Ferdinand Rudolf von Waldstein and Freiin Elisabeth Raschin von Riesenburg. Johann Ernst and Maria had two sons, Ernst Wilhelm and Joseph Willibald, both of whom had progeny. Johann Ernst died 9 July 1747 in Prague, his widow on 23 July 1748 in Behlorad.

Johann Ernst was a member of the Bohemian branch of the house of Schaffgotsch founded by Anton von Schaffgotsche, Herr zu Schildau (d.1508). It occupied a significantly weaker social and economic position than the Silesian main line, but it still managed to carve out a complex of estates in Eastern Bohemia in the 17th and 18th centuries, gain the title of Graf (Count), and occupy important positions in the government of Bohemia. From 1734 to his death Johann Ernst was senior burgrave (Oberstburggraf) of Prague, the highest official for law and police matters in Bohemia. In 1739 he was rewarded with membership of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

There was close contact between the Bohemian and Silesian branches of the house of Schaffgotsch, as exemplified by the extensive correspondence between Johann Ernst and his cousin Johann Anton Gotthard (1675-1742), director of the district authority of Silesia.
