BIOGRAPHY Wilhelm, or Johann Wilhelm, was a younger son of Ernst von Schaffgotsche and Magdalena von Popschütz. He was a descendant of Anton Schaffgotsche, Herr zu Schildau, founder of the Bohemian line of the family, one of three sons of Hans Schaff gt. Gotsch zu Kynast, Kemnitz, Warmbrunn, Hirschberg und Petersdorf to have progeny. Wilhelm's elder brother Johann Ernst received the hereditary title of Bohemian Baron in 1674, and Bohemian Count in 1681. Upon his childless death both titles extinguished. Wilhelm himself was made a hereditary Bohemian Baron in 1669.
On 9 January 1673 Wilhelm married Eva Maria von Zedlitz, the daughter of Christoph von Zedlitz and Maria von Warnsdorf. They had a daughter Johanne Agathe, and three sons of whom Johann Ernst Anton and Gottfried Ferdinand would have progeny. Johann Ernst and his childless brother Christoph Wilhelm became Bohemian counts in 1703. Only the sons of Johann Ernst would in turn have progeny.
Wilhelm died on 3 February 1697.
