About Johann Frederich Merckel
1) - The following is according to; "The Palatine Families of New York,"
974.7 D2j, by Henry (Hank) Jones, referencing #496 on the Hunter List.
The Governor Hunter Ration Lists of June 1710 to Sept. 1714 delineates
a list of those Palatine emigrants who were settled in New York City and
along the Hudson River under the patronage of Queene Anne of England, in
1710. The Documentary History of New York, Vol III gives a census of those
in New York City, and also of those settled in the West Camp, along the
Hudson River, but there is no mention of those in the East Camp, although
it is known that there were unlisted settlements on the east
side of the Hudson River. During the summer of 1731, Mr. Boyd Ehle,
through his London agents, caused a search of the records there. The
result was that the ledger accounts of Governor Hunter were consulted and
all names of heads of families drawing rations were copied. One of
the approximately 850 people listed on Gov. Hunter's list was Frederick
MERCKEL, in the West Camp.
2) - Palatine Immigrant Magazine, vol XVII No. 1, Jan 1992 identifies
Felix Merckel as the father of Freiderich Merckel.
3) - Further records of the presence of Friederich MERCKEL and his
family being among these first settlers of the Mohawk Valley of New
York are found in "The Kocherthal Records," This translation of the
baptismal and mariage records of Rev. Joshua Kocherthal, the pastor of
Palatine congregation of the West Camp Lutheran Church, and Schoharie,
New York. A translation made from the original by the Lutheran Quarterly
(published at Gettysburg, PA), which is now deposited in the Archives at
Albany, New York, remaining the property of the West Camp Lutheran
Church.
4) - The ancestral home of (Johann) Friederich MERCKEL's family was at
6733 Hassloch, Germany, (7km. east of Neustadt a.d. Weinstrasse; Chbks.
begin 1700 Ref.) The wife (1st wife) of Friederich MERCKEL was named
Anna Barbara, according to the Hassloch registers.
5) - Palatine Immigrant Magazine, vol XVII, No.1, Jan 1992, mentions
that Freiderich Merckel's father was "Felix." Although the birth and death
dates are slightly off, it does give the correct places, wives & children.
(Info supplied 21 Oct 1995 by Rene Thompson (Naithom@aol.com).
6) - Friederich MERCKEL made his first entry on the Hunter Lists 4 July
1710 with 5 dependants ( 3 over 10 years of age and 2 under 10.) The
notation for 4 Aug 1710 mentions the same number in the household, and
then records a special entry for a wife (2nd marriage, first wife's
surname unknown, but given name(s) seem to have been Anna Barbara, the
same as the second wife); the widow MAYIN (in German, the adding of
"IN" to the husband's surname, such as MAY, creates the wife's surname.)
The ledger section adds "Christoph MAY's widow married with Fredreric
MERCKEL." On 4 Oct. 1710, The family showed 4 over 10 years of age and 2
under 10; the MERCKEL family was entered next to Philipp Helmer on
this date, and (it is known that) Helmer originated near Hassloch at
Neustadt a. d. Weinstrasse. The household was noted with 5 persons over
10 and 2 under 10 on 10 Dec. 1710; with 6 over 10 and 1 under 10 on 24
June 1711; with 7 over 10 on Sept. 1711; with 7 over 10 and 1 under 10 on
24 Dec. 1711; and finally, with 6 persons over 10 and 1 person under 10

Surname appears as Merkle and Merkel. (Johann) was a christening name;
he would have been known by the name of Frederick. He was married
circa 1701-03 to Barbara Anna Altman also of Germany. Johan Frederick
died c 1729 in Ulster County, New York. He was listed as head of
household of Palatine families in the settlement of West Camp, NY in winter
1710. In 1715 he received a grant of 84 acres south of Churchland in
