: Note H8: There are a number of descendants of this family living in Stokes County today, as well as those who have moved to other parts of the country. Some members spell the name Petrie, and other ways. The founderof the family in Stokes County followed the path of both the German and Scotch Irish settlers of Western Pennsylvania who moved south alongthe "Great Wagon Road" seeking affordable land. The first member in America was Johan Jacob Petry (sometimes spelled Petri in old records), who arrived from Germany when he was 21.
: : Jacob Petri settled in Pennsylvania, married Ana Eve Kuehlin there and this couple reared a sizeable family before moving to North Carolina. Records indicate that he was a shoemaker, but land records, estatepapers, will, etc. after he reached this area all show that farming was his primary occupation in this state. Land was the lure that encouraged both Jacob and his adult sons to move from Pennsylvania.
: : Early records in Rowan and Surry County (prior to the formation of Stokes) indicate that actually some of his children preceded him here ---although the date of registering land was the date of occupation of the same land are often separated by years because of the difficulty in going to the county seat to attend to this. When a man needed to travel from what is now Germanton to Salisbury at this early period, it was often several years before this was done. By the time of the Revolution, all of the family were settled in the Stokes County area. Twoof the sons, Johan and Adam fought against the Chicamoga Indians defending the colony just before the Revolution. Jacob provided supplies for North Carolina forces and was reimbursed for this according to payment records. Long-standing, but undocumented, family tradition says that Henry, another of Jacob's sons, fought under the command of his neighbor Joseph Winston at the Battle of Guilford Court House and that Winston sent him home after he was wounded in his own private conveyance. In any event, Henry recovered from his wounds and lived to fathera large family before his death in same year as his father's 1804.
: : Like many names of German origin, descendants made changes in anglicizing the name so some members of the family still to be found in thisarea and in other states spell the name Petree and some Petrie. A few spell it Petrea. First names were altered also so Johan became John, Henrich, Henry, etc. The sons and daughters who moved with the father, Jacob, married in the colony (or state after the Revolution) amongfellow Germans, either Moravians or Lutheran or Reformed families. Surnames of families who married Petree's during this period were Zimmerman, Frey, Kraus, Wolfe, etc. Jacob and his wife were Lutherans and Jacob Petree and Adam Geiger received 100 acres as a land grant for the "German Church" (now Nazareth Lutheran Church, Rural Hall). They and at least one son and his wife were buried here. Jacob has no markerbut Ana Eve, Henry and Marguerite Zimmerman Petree's graves are marked. Subsequent generations espoused other church denominations, and many members of the family have been active in the Christian Church in this region for more than a century.
: : One of Jacob Petree's great grandsons, Riley Frost Petree, represented his county in the N. C. Constitutional Convention of 1868 and also served in the state legislature. R. F. Petree's son, Riley J. Petree, was also a member of the State Legislature around the turn of the century and was a great advocate of the important educational legislation of the period when public education was given a great boost in NorthCarolina. Another son, Nathaniel was well known as an attorney and county official whose name appears as clerk of Court on countless nineteenth and early twentieth century deeds and estate records. His granddaughter, Ruth Petree, is widely known throughout the county for her years of devoted service in the public schools. There are manly other descendants of this family who continue to serve their county, state and nation, living in both Stokes and other counties of the state in addition to those who migrated to other parts of the country. --- Rachel F. Rawls
: : JOHN JACOB PETRY (PETREE) #782 John Jacob Petry (Petree) born 1722, son of Nicholas Petree (Petry) Jacob came to America in 1743, when he sailed from Rotterdam, aboard the "Loyal Judith". James Cowery was the master of this vessel After his arrival in America, Jacob settled inPenn., and in 1747, on Sept. 9, he married Anna Eve Koehulin. This Marriage is recorded at Moselem Zion Church, Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Jacob and Anna had Ten children. They were; Eve Barbara, John Henry, Adam, John, Mary Catherine, Mary Dorothy, Elizabeth Margaretha, Johanna, Rebecca and Jacob Jr. Record indicate that John and Adam Petree were the first of his family to come to North Carolina, with John Henry arriving in North Carolina not long after his brothers. This was in the late 1760's and early 1770's, with the remainder of the family arriving in North Carolina before 1780. The exact time of Jacob's arrival in Stokes County is not known, but, in the 1780's the Petree family was on the farm located near Neatman Creek, approximately three miles north of the present town of Germanton. In 1795Jacob gave part of his farm to his son John Henry, and in 1798 he gave the remainder of his holdings to his youngest son. Jacob Jr. Some of Jacob's children had left this area, moving west or into nearby counties. Others had obtained farms of their own, also along Neatman Creek. There is some evidence that Jacob first settled about two miles west of the Neatman Creek location, possibly as early as 1799.
: : Jacob and his family were very active church people. Jacob was an elder and trustee in the Beaver Dam Lutheran Church. He and Adam Geiger were two of the people instrumental in starting this church. Jacob died in 1804 and is buried at the Lutheran church he helped found. His wife is also buried at this church, as are Henry and his wife. All graves are marked except Jacobs. After Jacob's death his children, who remained in Stokes Co., and his grandsons purchased farms up and down Neatman and Town Fork creeks and throughout the years the descendants of Jacob Petree have been involved in agriculture, medicine, education, politics, law, industry and church activities in Stokes County andother locations.

: : THE PETREE FAMILY, This article appeared in the Winston-Salem Courier 7/17/1980
: : One of the first members of the Petree family was Jacob Petree, who was born in 1722 and who came to Pa. on the Ship Loyal Judith from Rotterdam in 1743 when he was 21 years old. The Daughters of the American Revolution gave the data on this man in a book entitled Early Families of N. C. Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service, a copy of which may be found in the Fifth St. Library in Winston-Salem. In 1780 Jacob Petree bought 175 acres of land in Surry County from Valentine Frey Sr. on Townfork Creek. Petree became a memberof the Lutheran Church on Beaver Dam Creek and was a trustee in that church in 1790 when the state of N.C. granted him and Adam Geiger 102acres in trust for the Lutherans. Petree married in 1747 to Anna EvaKuehnlin in Berks Co., PA. Petree's will is recorded in the Stokes County Will Book II, on Pages 54-55 and is dated 1803 and probated at his death in 1804. The following children are named in his will: Eva Barbara Petree, the wife of Adam Wolf; John Henry Petree (born 1755) who married Margaretha Barbara Zimmerman (born 1759) and lived in the Reedy Creek Section of Rowan County, later to be Surry and then Stokes; Jacob Petree Jr., who moved to Indiana; John Adam Petree who married Rosina Frey; John Petree who died before 1796; Mary Dorothy Petree; Johann Petree; and Margaretha Rebecca Petree who married Hammond Morris. The information on Jacob Petree included the fact that he served as apatriot during the American Revolution and furnished sundries and supplies to the militia. Jacop Petree died in 1804, his wife preceding him in death in September, 1803. Mrs. W. O. Absher of North Wilkesboro compiled this genealogy data on the Petree family.

: : "I've been reading various messages and realize that a lot of peopleare wondering where Jacob Petri was from in Germany.: After 2 years of continuous research I obtained copies from the Lutheran Archives in Bopard that show Jacob was from Schonborn, Germany (near Alterkulz) south of Bopard. He was born Jan. 24, 1723 (contrary to9/1722) and baptized Jan 31, 1723. He was the son of Johan/Nickel/Niklas Petri and 2nd wife Anna Margaretha Schall (of Biebern) and were married Jan. 1722. Niklas died 11/1750 and is buried in Schonborn. Niklas' father was Johannes Petri, he died 1712. Johannes father was also called Johann and he died 1673. I have copies of the following documents: baptism record of Jacob Petri; marriage record of Niklas and Margarthea in 1722; death record of Niklas in 1750; marriage record of Jacoband Anna, 1747, Kutztown, PA, Mt. Zion Moselim Church; passenger shiplist of the Loyal Judith with Jacob Petri's signature, 1743."
: : Johan Jacob's surname was spelled Petri and Petry but the spelling was changed later to Petree and Petree. Johan left Germany in his youthafter learning the trade of a shoemaker. He sailed from Rotterdam on the ship "Loyal Judith", and arrived in Philadelphia, PA 2 Sep 1743. Jacob and Eva raised a sizeable family before moving to NC. Their two oldest sons, Adam and John left PA to come to NC, probably by way of Norfolk,VA and then west from Norfolk and down into NC. They must have written or gone back to convince Johan and Eva to also come to NC. Jacob was "getting along in years" by this time, but moved to a new country and became a solid citizen. There is a record of Jacob Petree being naturalized on 4 Apr 1762 in Windsor Township, Bucks Co., PA. Records indicate Jacob was a shoemaker, but land records, estate papers, will, etc., after he reached this area, show farming was his primary occupation in NC. Land was the lure that encouraged Jacob and his adult sonsto move from PA. His two oldest sons fought the Chicamoga Indians defending the colony just before the Revolution. Jacob provided supplies for NC forces and was reimbursed for this according to payment records. Jacob and his son, John Henry, were patriots in the American Revolution, DAR # 729510. Jacob and his wife were Lutheran. He and Adam Geiger received 100 acres as a land grant for the "German Church" (now the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall, NC)
: The Daughters of the American Revolution gave the data on this man in a book entitled Early Families of N. C. Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service, a copy of which may be found in the Fifth St. Library in Winston-Salem.

from Valentine Frey Sr. on Townfork Creek. Petree became amember of the Lutheran Church on Beaver Dam Creek and was a trustee inthat church in 1790 when the state of N.C. granted
him and Adam Geiger 102 acres in trust for the Lutherans.
