About Johanna (Anna) Erdős-Englander
- 1905 - Marriage to Lajos ERDŐS (ENGLÄNDER) in Budapest, Hungary
Anna (Wilhelm) Erdős (1880-1971) was a high school mathematics teacher and the mother of the renowned mathematician, Dr. Paul Erdős. Anna was born in Vag Besztercze, Trencin Co., Hungary in 1880 and died in Budapest in 1971, age 91 years. There are several biographical pieces about her in the book "My Brain is Open: The Mathematical Journeys of Paul Erdős" (1998), by Bruce Schechter. She was devoted to her son -- her only surviving child -- and was always called "Anyuka" by him. In March 1913, as she was in a Budapest hospital giving birth to Paul (her third child), a scarlet fever epidemic hit the city. By the time she returned home with her newborn baby, her two older children (Klara and Magda, ages 7 and 5) were dead.
