The 88-year-old grandmother who was brutally assaulted by a burglar over the weekend began to cry out of gratitude when a charity paid for her hospitalization in a private hospital in that town. Mrs. Joey Ackermann, who was described as "independent and tidy" by her family, was admitted to Cuyler Hospital yesterday morning after being treated at a state hospital last week. She has not spoken much since the attack at her home in Penford on the town. The benefactor, a local businessman who wants to remain anonymous, was shocked on Monday to read about Ackermann's assault in Die Burger. He was concerned about her well-being in the state hospital in Port Elizabeth where she was treated and contacted her family with the help of Die Burger. A deposit of at least R4 000 must be paid before admitting patients without a medical aid to the surgical ward, where Ackermann is currently being treated. Ackermann's treatment could probably amount to thousands more. The modest benefactor said on Tuesday his faith spurred him to help Ackermann. His own mother was also almost the victim of a burglar who attacked her neighbor in a home for the elderly. "It is cowardly to attack the elderly. We need to protect our old people and roll up our sleeves to help the police. It is actually a right, and not a privilege, to feel safe in your country. ”He personally visited Ackermann in hospital yesterday. She sustained serious head injuries after being hit several times by a burglar, who allegedly broke her bedroom window's burglar defense Friday night. Her grandson Rudolph found his grandmother on the floor in her bedroom on Saturday morning. “Our family is very grateful that my grandmother is getting the best care now. I really didn't think there were any people doing such good deeds, ”said Mr. Ackermann.
