About Johanna Jonker

Johanna Jonker was one of 3 children of Indonesian free slaves Jonker van Makassar and Rosetta van Java, who were the progenitors of the South African JONKER family.

After their manumission around 1717/18, this muslim couple had 3 free born children of their own: • 1 son Abdul(lah) born ~Okt 1718, baptised Adolf on 25 Jan 1733 aged 14; • 2 Daughters Jamela en Raja born 1722-1724 [HEESE H., Opgaafrolle for Cape Town and District 1719-1735]. They were baptised Johanna (oldest) and Catharina (youngest) on 2 Dec 1731, aged about 7 and 9, by their widowed mother Rosetta, weeks before her own death.

She also had an older half-brother Jacob Jansz, a voorkind of her mother Rosetta with a European man from Amsterdam, and two younger half-brothers Johannes and Adriaan Bastiaans, from Rosetta and Johanna’s step-father Arij Bastiaans, whom Rosetta married after Johanna Jonker’s father Jonker van Makassar’s death in 1727.

Johanna Jonker married the widowed physician Johannes braun Olckers (from Rendsburg in Germany, son of Jurgen O. and Barbara Schon) on 12/10/1755, on the same day that her brother Adolph Jonker and his wife maria Langeveld baptise their 8th son Daniel. Johanna’s husband Johannes Braun Olckers sign as witness to her nephew’s baptism.

Johannes Braun Olckers and Johanna Jonker only had one child, a son Johannes Adolph(us) Olckers, born 16/5/1762.

Physician Johannes Braun Olckers was repatriated in 1767-8, but the family returned to the Cape.

In Jonker van Makassar's will his 2 daughters are named Jamela (fairly clear) but the handwriting of the other is not so clear - could be Raja, Raija, something like that....Em Lo June 2015
