She appeared as Hannah Gern in the immigration record of her parents, who came to America in 1785 with five children.
Evidence for her maiden name, Garnes [sic], appears in a biography of her son-in-law, Eccles Nay, who married Johanna's daughter Elizabeth. The biography refers to her as Hannah, the name under which she immigrated from Germany with her parents in 1785 and names her husband as Michael Mills. The biography also reports the marriage of Johanna's daughter Elizabeth Mills and Eccles Nay occurred in Franklin, Jefferson Co., Ohio [sic, clearly Jefferson Twp., Franklin Co., Ohio].
