About John Garn

He was born in Kürnbach, Karlsruhe, Baden Württemberg, Germany, where his name was Johannes Gern. His age-at-death on his grave marker places his birth on 16 August 1778, a date often reported for him. However, the record of his birth and christening at the Kürnbach Evangelical Lutheran Church clearly indicates that he was born exactly two years later. Exact birth years were not as important when he was living as they are now. And people often lost track of their exact age but seldom reported their day and month of birth incorrectly. John clearly was one who lost track of the exact year he was born. And there is plenty of evidence to establish that he was the son of Conrad Gern of Kürnbach.

In addition to the two children listed below, John Garn and his wife Susan (Smith) Garn had a daughter Christina, who was born around 1806 based on census records and her confirmation date. She died after she appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census. Her grave has not been found. This daughter Christina Garn married Elias Miller, who died after 1844 and before the 1850 U.S. Census was recorded. They lived near Helena in Sandusky Co., Ohio. Some of Elias and Christina (Garn) Miller's children were buried in the same cemetery as her parents and have grave markers there, including Abraham Miller and probably David Miller.
