About Johanna Retief van Aarde

Johanna "Joy" van Aarde (1928 - 2006)

Brief overview:

Joy (77), who was frail and lived alone, was bludgeoned to death with a meat hammer, in her Gordons Bay home on 21st May 2006.

A gang of nine young men were accused of breaking into Johanna's home, murdering her, then breaking into a neighbouring home. They held four people at gunpoint, including a five months' pregnant woman, who was raped.

The nine males broke into Clifford Bacon’s home in Milnerton. They tied up Clifford, his fiancé, his son Calvin and his son’s friend Michael Billson, and held them hostage for over two hours. The men were assaulted, and Clifford's wife, who was five months pregnant, was raped twice.

Protesters displayed an effigy of a hanged man outside the Strand Magistrate's Court on Wednesday ahead of the appearance of nine people arrested after an orgy of rape and murder. About 100 people took part in the protest including family and friends of 77-year-old Joy van Aarde, slain in her Gordons Bay home on the night of May 21, and of a 25-year-old neighbour who was raped the same night. The protesters carried posters calling for the return of the death penalty. "Hang the barbarians," read one placard. The life-size effigy was hung from a gibbet made of poles erected on a trailer that also carried a coffin. The co-ordinator of the protest, Fanie le Roux, said the purpose of the demonstration was "to send out a very clear and concise message to the government that people are fed up with crime and that the government must do something now. "It's the government's responsibility to secure the safety of its citizens... and they are failing us hopelessly," he said.
