News paper clip says he was married to Anna. They had 12 Daughters and 3 sons. He started working at Cape railways at age 17., which later became the S.A.R. where he went on pension.

He was baptised in the Lutheren Church in 1840, however went on to join the N.G.Kerk, before he was married. He was confirmed together with his brother Frederick Louis Stadler on 3rd April 1863. This can be seen in the N.G.Kerk registers Stellenbosch. Johan worked at the SAR for his working life, and went on there pension. His wife to be Anna Verwey, and her Brother Gert Verwey were baptised as adults the following year on 01 July 1864 also in the N.G.Kerk. He and Annie went on to have 12 children.

Annie passed away in 1933, he moved to 6 MacIntyre road Bellvile with his daughters Gertrude, and Anna. John as he later became known passed away at home on 17 August 1939 at age 99. He is buried with his wife Annie and other family at Maitland Cemetery at plot 13363 in block E. This a large stand 3m x 3m.

Sadly this grave was vandalized, and only a daughter headstone remains
