Johann Peter and his family, along with Casper Glattfelder and others, set out for America. But, before reaching Basel, Switzerland, John Peter died on 21 April 1742 at the age of 41 years. The extended family then returned to their village of Glattfelden to bury his body. The next year the family group again traveled to the port Basel Switzerland then on to the port city of Rotterdam Netherlands where the boarded the ship "Francis & Elizabeth" for the perilous voyage to Philadelphia. Arriving August of 1743.

The Glattfelder family originated in Glattfelden, Zurich, Switzerland. Brothers Casper (b. 1709) and Peter (b. 1700) set out for the Carolinas in 1742. Sadly, Johann Peter drowned in the Rhine River on the way to Basel, and the two families returned to Glattfelden. The following year, the two families left again for America on the ship "Francis and Elizabeth," and arrived 30 August 1743 to Philadelphia. Both settled for some time in York County, Pennsylvania, and some of Peter's family (Felix and Rudolf) moved on to Rowan County (now Davidson County), North Carolina. In North Carolina, the spelling of the name was eventually changed to "Clodfelter."
