"He began his career as a teacher in 1777 but was one of the building contracters for the new hospital in 1782 and licensed baker in 1785. From 1779 he was one of the leaders of the Cape Patriot Movement and became Secretary of the Volks Representaten in 1784. In 1785 he sold his house in Cape Town and left with his wife for the Netherlands where he sought contact with influential patriots and worked on a comprehensive petition. Later he became editor of the Nationale Courante and from 1801 he was a clerk of the Bureau ter Conversie der Staatschulden. A year later he died of tuberculosis. His wife and daughters received a free passage to the Cape and in 1806 were in posession of his two farms on the sonderend River. Kaap de Goede Hoop, zoon van Johannes Hermanus REDELINGHUYS (Redelinghuis), Aankomst 02.09.1742 op die "Beukerhijsen" van Hamm in Brandenburg (Duitsland). Jagter 1747-1749, burger in 1749, bode weeskamer, en Johanna Maria de VRIES."
