About Petrus Johannes Redelinghuys, ii

born 1772 baptized 13 September 1772, Cape Town died 18 June 1848, Cape Town 4

Notes: He was left a slave, Adonis van der Kaap, by his mother's will of 1803.

The information for this family comes partly from the Death Notice of this Johannes Hermanus Redelinghuys (1882) and partly from the De Smidt Manuscript of which there is a copy in the GISA library.

Johannes Hermanus Redelinghuys de Smidt was a grandson of this PJ Redelinghuys.

Petrus Johannes Redelinghuys died at his residence off Napier Street, Cape Town. Aunt Susan describes it as a small house facing the hill and not far from Grandfather de Smidt's house in Somerset Road (23). She also says he died on a Saturday night and can recollect her father being summonded to the death bed and seeing the old gentleman in his coffin. Latterley they had been in most indigent circumstances so much so indeed that their son Johannes Hermanus was their sole support. (note by JHR de Smidt, 1913)

He and his wife are noted in the same source to have been buried in the Botha family vault in the Dutch Reformed Cemetery in Cape Town as well as his son Petrus Johannes and his wife. The burials from this vault were later transferred to the Maitland Cemetery and re-interred in the Botha plot where Mr C. Graham Botha is having a suitable monumental slab prepared on which all names and dates will be recorded. (note by JHR de Smidt, 1913)

It is not entirely clear from the context as to which PJ Redelinghuys is being referred to in the above notes but I hope that I have interpreted it correctly.

married 31 January 1796 at Cape Town Susanna Margaretha Wessels, who died 1862
