This township was divided from Upper Macungie in 1823 . The Little Lehigh runs through it with Swabia and Spring Creeks as tributaries. Spring Creek was also known as Mill Creek. By 1845 there were six gristmills, three saw mills, one oil mill, and five or six stores in this township. The population was 2,156 in 1840.

Of the earlly churches there is mention of Lehigh Zions 1750, which was original Lutheran, and St Paul's Union 1784. Lehigh Zions was also called Lehigh Church and is where Wellersville later sprang up. Connected with St. Paul's, which is near Trexlertown, there was a double stone school house built about the same time as the church and owned by the church.

Concerning mills, Albrights gristmill, also called Albrecht Mill, was below Trexlertown on Spring Creek. It is considered to be very early. A Grist mill and saw mill was sold by Albright in 1815 to Michael Kramer. It was also owned at other times by Jacob schantz, Mr. Mohr, and Mr. Guldin (1913).

Geissenger's Mill, or Romich's Mill at the Lehigh Church, was built by Frederick Romig who settled there by 1732, and bought land adjoining the church. He built a sawmill on a branch of Saucon creek. It was later called Schmoyer's Mill, then Wagenhorst's Mill, and later Geissinger's Mill (1884). The area was also known as Romig's Settlement.
