About Johannes Frans Ryerson
Resided in Brooklyn, NY until 1783. Went to Nova Scotia from 1783 - 1789. Retuned to Brooklyn in 1789. Married his cousin, Maritje (Mary) Wessels in 1747
(from the Ryerson Genealogy)
"JOHANNIS F. (John Francis) RYERSON,' {Frans,'- Martin^), son of Frans and Jannetje (Dey) Ryerson, was b., or bap., April i, 1724, and d. April 8, 1798. He usually spelled his name "Ryarson." He resided in Brooklyn, N. Y., the greater part of his life, although the days of his youth were probably spent on his father's farm in New Jersey. He acquired considerable property both in New Jersey and Brooklyn, also in Nova Scotia, Canada. He espoused the cause of the Loyalists during the Revolutionary War, and took a decided stand against the Colonists. The close of the war in 1783 found him in the same predicament as thousands of other Loyalists, a refugee, with property confiscated and obliged to flee the country. He went to Nova Scotia, accompanied by his wife, sons, a daughter and two servants. They left New York Oct., 1783, for Annapolis, Nova Scotia. In 1784 his name appears on the muster-roll of the Loyalists who were recorded in June of that year. He purchased land at Clements, N. S., of John Hall, and lived there about five years.
By reason of a new law passed by the Continental Congress he was enabled to regain some of his property which, no doubt, prompted him, about 1789, to return to Brooklyn, and forthwith he took up his abode in Newtown, N. Y., where he purchased, in May, 1790, a large farm at the Dutch Kills, which is now a part of Long Island City. His son Francis remained in Nova Scotia and became the head of the Nova Scotia branch of the family. His son George returned to Brooklyn with him.
Mr. Ryerson m. his cousin, Maritje (Mary) Wessels, dau. of Evart and Annetje (Ryerson) Wessels. Their children were:
56. I. FRANCIS, b. 1748; d. July 12, 1841; m. Sarah Ryerson.
57. II. JOHN, d. (sup.) 1828.
58. III. GEORGE, m. twice. "
There is a disagreement in ancestry here:
John Francis Ryerson is The Francis Ryarson who settled in Nova Scotia at the end of the Revolution. On Page 595 of Calnek's County of Annapolis NS we read as follows: Gen1: Martin R. Gen2: George or Joses (Joris) Gen3: Lucas Gen4: George Lucas Gen5: (this) John Francis
I see that many trees have it otherwise. I do not know what is correct. Did Calnek get it wrong? with John Francis' father?
