Johannes 'Johan' Steyn (1937 - 2002)

Brief overview:

Johan (65), living at Plot 55 Bynespoort in the Cullinan area, was shot dead on on the morning of Saturday 27th July 2002.

Johan was shot in the neck and died, His son Jacques (32) was shot in the right leg, but survived.

They had experienced a number of break-ins and burglaries, and were burgled again the previous night. They followed the "track" of a bicycle, which had apparently been used by the burglars. Inspector Percy Morokane of Pretoria police said the track led the two men from their smallholding to Plot 55, where they confronted some workers. One worker allegedly went to fetch the plot owner. Jacques said: "We waited and waited, but no one came out.

Just when my father and I had decided to leave, the plot owner came walking up to us." Morokane said Steyn jun. allegedly became involved in a row with the plot owner, after which he was shot in the leg. Another worker went to fetch a shotgun from inside the house during the commotion. Morokane said Johan allegedly fired two shots at the worker when he saw he had fetched a shotgun from the house. The shots did not hit anyone. The worker returned fire, and Johan was shot in the neck, and died instantly.
