Notes: In 1723 he petitioned the Council of Policy, stating that he had had a loan farm for the last five years, called the Lange Kuil, in the Swartland at the Salt River under the Coenraden Berg, and that it adjoined the property of Pieter Slabbert. He asks to be granted the freehold.

# The parents of Johannes Visser

There were three boys named Johannes Visser baptised 1682, 1693 and 1697. We know that Johannes 1682 was alive in 1715 (MOOC 13/1/1, 57) and Johannes 1697 in 1744 (MOOC 13/1/3, 43) whereas the complete family, parents and siblings, of Johannes 1693 disappears from the Cape records after 1708 and we will assume that he disappeared with them.

Johannes Visser and Maatje Slabbert seemed not to favour baptismal witnesses for their children, only two of the eight having a witness, neither of which gives us a clue as to their father's parentage. The only clues we have that the Johannes Visser who married Maatje Slabbert was the son of Gerrit Jans Visser and Jannetie Thielemans are these: 1. His eldest son was named Gerrit. 2. In the opgaaf returns for the period 1719 to 1761 there appears a Jan Visser Coenraadszoon as well as Johannes Visser (no patronymic) and his wife Maatje Slabbert.
