Houghton County Mine Inspector Report https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015074974844&view=1up&seq=12

Accident 17 — May 24, John Kaivupalo and John Ristel while workingin a cutting- out stope in the 19th level north of No. 2 Shaft, Tamarack Mine met with a serious accident. Kaivupalo being instantly killed by a fall of vein rock.

At the inquest, held before Coroner Macdonald, John Ristel gave the following testimony: We drilled one hole this morning and found that six holes had been drilled by our partners on the previous shift. We charged the seven holes and blasted five, leaving two holes charged. One of the holes that we blasted did not break and we charged it again. I fired three holes and was on my way out when the ground fell and killed my partner. I then went back and put out the matches on the fuse to to prevent further accidents. We did not examine the ground after the first five holes were blasted, but we had done so in the morning, and pinched down all the loose ground. I considered the ground quite safe before we blasted." The jury brought in a verdict "that, John Kaivupalo came to his death by falling vein rock in a cutting-out stope north of No. 2 Shaft, at the 19th level, Tamarack Mine, on the 24th day of May, 1895, and were of the opinion that deceased and his partner should have examined the ground before firing the second blast."
