ACCIDENT No. 39.— July 11-Occurred at the 29th level south of No. 9 shaft, south Hecla branch of the Calumet & Hecla mine, causing the death of John A. Peterson, by a fall of vein rock, when in the act of prying it down.

An inquest was held before Coroner Fisher.

Testimony of witnesses:

Peter Bekkala testified as follows: "I know John A. Peterson, was working with him this morning when the accident happened. We were pushing down some loose rock with a crow-bar when the rock fell on him. I was so near to him, that the rock tore off my coat pocket when it fell. It was a piece of vein rock about two feet thick, and ten feet long. The deceased sounded the rock a couple of times with the crow-bar and the rock came down."

Joseph Shutts testified: "I was down in the stope this morning at the time of the accident. I was only 20 feet away from the deceased when the rock fell. Peterson was barring down the rock and so was his partner, Bekkala. I had been pinching down the loose rocks. They were together when the rock fell that struck Peterson. They had sounded the rock before, and it sounded good."

Peter Brusso corroborated the testimony of Joseph Shutts.

Verdict as follows: "We, the jury, find that the said John A. Peterson came to his death on the 11th day of July, 1902, at the 29th level, South No. 9 shaft. South Hecla branch of the Calumet & Hecla mine, by vein rock falling on him while in the act of barring it down."

Onnettomuus nro 39.— 11. heinäkuuta - Calumet & Hecla -yhtiön Hecla-kaivoksessa tasolla 29, etelään kuilusta nro 9 John A. Peterson menetti henkensä, kun kivet joita hän oli pudottamassa alas putosi hänen päällensä.

Kuolemansyyn tutkintaa johti kuolinsyyntutkija ("Coroner") Fisher.

Todistajien lausunnot:

Peter Bekkala todisti seuraavaa: "Tunsin Jhn A. Peterson:in, olin työskentelemässä hänen kanssaan tänä aamuna, kun onnettomuus tapahtui. Pudotimme sorkkaraudalla joitakin irtonaisia kiviä, kun lohkare putosi hänen päällensä. Olin niin lähellä, että kivi repi minulta takintaskun. Se oli palanen malmisuonta, noin 2 jalkaa (60 cm) paksu ja 10 jalkaa (3 m) pitkä. Menehtynyt kokeili lohkaretta sorkkaraudalla pari kertaa ja se putosi alas."

Joseph Shutts todisti: "Olin alhaalla rintauksessa tänä aamuna onnettomuuden aikaan.Olin vain 20 jalan (6 m) päässä menehtyneestä, kun lohkare putosi. Peterson oli pudottelemassa kiviä ja niin oli hänen työparinsakin, Bekkala. Minä olin myös pudottanut irtonaisia kiviä. He olvat yhdessä lohkareen pudotessa Petersonin päälle. He olivat kokeilleet kiveä aikaisemmin ja se oli kuullostanut hyvältä."

Peter Brusso vahvisti Joseph Shutts:in lausunnon.

Päätös: "Me valamiehistö toteamme, että John A. Peterson sai surmansa 11 heinäkuuta 1902 Calumet & Hecla -yhtiön Hecla-kaivoksen tasolla 29, etelään kuilusta nro 9, kun malmisuonen lohkare, jota hän oli kampeamassa irti putosi hänen päällensä."
