John Allen (Allen John) Lucas

He was familiarly known as "Allen" but sources vary on whether his formal name was Allen John, or John Allen. People who knew him used both variations, as did later primary sources, adding to the confusion. His gravestone, for example, has John Allen, whereas the California Death Record has Allen John. The 1902-1910 Oakland City Directories all list him as Allen John. The earliest known source, the 1880 census, names him simply as Allen. A birth certificate is still needed to provide a definitive source for his true birth name.
