About John R Allen

JOHN R. ALLEN a descendant from one of the pioneer families of Greene County, was born October 21, 1841, and is a son of Andrew and Polly Ann (Rumley) Allen, natives respectively of Tennessee and Indiana, who settled in Greene County in 1838. John R. assisted his father in a saw mill until 1860, and on the breaking-out of the rebellion enlisted in Company D, Fourteenth Indiana Volunteers, participating in the battles of Winchester, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Antietam, being wounded at the last-named place. After being in Germantown hospital two months, he rejoined his old regiment, and was engaged in the battle of Cold Harbor, and on his term of service expiring, returned to Indianapolis, remaining there one year; then came back to Greene County, where he has since resided. For two years he was engaged in farming and stock-raising, then embarked in the lumber and milling business. For five years, beginning in 1876, he kept hotel livery stable in Bloomfield, since when he has been engaged in sawmilling in Owensburg. This mill has a capacity of 8,000 feet per day, and the greatest portion of his lumber is shipped to Eastern markets. Mr. Allen possesses a farm of eighty acres in White River bottom near Bloomfield, besides other valuable real estate in the county. His marriage with Anna A. Casad was celebrated in 1865, and seven children have blessed this union--Leonidas, Eliza, Edward, Lola, Ida, Franklin and Ethel.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana

The Reaper is near to the long stand corn; the weary will all be made free. The Death Angel has again claimed an aged and respected citizen from our midst. John R. ALLEN was born October 22, 1841, at Scotland, Indiana, and departed this life February 23, 1924, aged eighty-two years and four months. He was the son of Audrey and Polly ALLEN and was one of nine children. He spent his early years on the farm and when the North and South parted, he, at the tender age of nineteen years, answered the call of his country, enlisting in COMPANY D, FOURTEENTH REGIMENT, serving three years. He was in active service, engaging in twenty-three hard battles and skirmishes, helping to secure for us the peace and prosperity we now enjoy. He was married to Ann CASAD on December 4, 1864. To this union fourteen children were born, ten of whom preceded their father in death. His is survived by four children—Mrs. Lola WORKMAN, of Linton; Mrs. Henry HAYWOOD of Bloomfield; Charles ALLEN, Bedford, and Sam ALLEN of Switz City; eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. He spent the most of his life in this and neighboring communities; was active in community welfare. He lived for a short time in Minnesota; one summer in Kansas and two years in Bedford. He was at that time engaged in the lumber business. He later came to Bloomfield, engaging in the hotel business in the building known as the Combs House. He was a courteous and obliging host, as many well remember. At this time he affiliated with the Masonic lodge. He was active in municipal affairs until his health would no longer permit; was a good citizen; kind friend and neighbor; faithful husband and devoted father. He was blessed with many years, but taps have sounded again for him, he has answered the last roll call and gone to join that innumerable army that moves to that mysterious realm whence each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death. "The soldier rest, thy ware is o'er, sleep the sleep that knows not breaking; dream of battles fields no more, days of danger, night of waking, Soldier rest!" The funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry HAYWOOD, Wednesday afternoon, February 27, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Elder T. A. COX. Interment at the Walnut Grove Cemetery.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jun 9 2020, 5:22:51 UTC
