John Anderson married Sara Carney on November 28, 1752. John and three of his sons were in the Revolutionary War, serving as a Minute Man in Col Roebuck's Regiment. He died of wounds sustained on September 18, 1780 in the Battle of Augusta.

John Anderson (son of James Anderson and Mary Jordan) was born Abt. 1730 in Norfolk County, Virginia, and died October 08, 1781 in Killed In Battle, Augusta, Richmond County, Georgian.He married Sarah Carney on November 28, 1752 in Stafford County, Virginia, daughter of John Carney and Mary.

John was born about 1730, and died Sept 1780 in the Battle of Augusta. He married Sarah Carney 28 Nov 1752 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia.She was born about 1739, and died 1811 in Kentucky. John served in the Revolutionary War, and was killed and buried in Camden, South Carolina.John's son wrote in his Bible that John Anderson was killed by American Tories at the 1st seige of Augusta 10-18 Sep 1780. Another researcher states that this John Anderson did not die in Camden, South Carolina in 1781 at the Battle of Augusta.She asserts that John's file was combined with those of a different father and son John Anderson Sr and Jr of North Carolina.

DAR Application of Mrs. Dena Henslee Singleton, Nat'l #526822 shows that DAR had corrected to show that her ancestor John Anderson who married Sarah Carney was born 13 Jan 1724 in New York.Another researcher wrote the Lineage Research Committee of NSDAR in Washington D.C., regarding this entry, explaining the controversy over John's birthdate, etc.On 15 Aug 1979, they sent a letter stating - "The birthdate written in on National No. 526822 Is completely incorrect.That is the birthdate for John Anderson, son of Rev. James Anderson, but this man is not your Revolutionary ancestor.This man was married to Ann Irvin, from your records we know that your ancestor John Anderson was married to Sarah Carney.A date of circa 1730 has been given to your Revolutionary ancestor since we have no specific date for his birth."

To show otherwise, there are three other biographies that do not agree with the DAR: John Anderson and Sarah Carney were married in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia, 28 Nov 1752, where their three oldest children, Bailey (13 Nov 1753), Scarlet (10 Jun 1756) and Sela (1 Mar 1758) were born.During the Revolutionary War, this family was also in North Carolina, most likely on the Pacolet River where their sixth child, John, was born.

Sarah Anderson, widow, resided in Greenville County, South Carolina, in 1790 with one male sixteen of over, three under 16 and one other female. The following certificates, quoted verbatim, concern this family: "State of South Carolina, Know all men by these presents that I, Baley Anderson of Ninety Six District doth Constitute and appoint Henry Liles of the Sd State and District aforesaid my true and Lawfull attorney in my Name to Ask Demand, Recover and Receive the Bounty land Coming to my Father John Anderson Decesed and my Brother Scarlet Anderson also for being in the Service of Georgia Given under my Hands and Seal this--17 day of January 1784 Richard Freeman Baley Anderson (seal) her Sarah Anderson (seal) Ann X Russell mark "To the Commisrs of the Treasury of the State of So Carolina. The Indent it is attached to is dated 7 Jun 1786. Audited Account 114: I find it most curious that Indents for g/f John, uncle Scarlett, and uncle Joshua actually show that when written they were ALL "AUDITED ACCOUNT #114" - not A.A.115, 117, 124 !!!! I think what happened was our earlier cousins identified the Capt John Anderson, John Anderson Jr, and John Anderson Sr as grandpa and his son so the files were put together as one family, i.e., g/f John, uncle John Jr, uncle Scarlett, uncle Joshua. When in fact, Capt John, John Sr, John Jr were completely different persons. Marriage Notes for John Anderson and Sarah Carney: Married at the Aquia Episcopal church in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia. One person says that John was born in Scotland and another says that he was born in New York.
