Evelyn received info on the Anderson line from Alta DeCamp which verifies some info and contradicts other, adds some new names in Feb 1995.

From Judy Cannon: Obituary in The Miner's Express Newspaper, 27 March 1849. He was born in Virginia and raised in Kentucky. He was for many years a school teachers and for 40 years a member of the Baptist Church."

4th of 10 children.

From an article that W.A. Anderson had saved in the family papers:

"John [James?] Anderson emigrated from Scotland to Virginia in the year 1746. Samuel Anderson was born on board ship druing the voyage. Little or nothing is known about any other members of the family. Samuel Anderson and his father became wealthy planters and lived near Richmond in Hanover County, Virginia. Here John Anderson was born October 16, 1779. the other children left the home and very little is known of their life. Following the trend of the times, Samuel Anderson and his son sold their plantation in Virginia and moved to Kentucky in 1797. they purchased 1400 acres of land in Maison County near the city of Lexington. The other members of the family settled in the southern states. John Anderson married Elizabeth Haggard, a relative of the father of Sir Rider Haggard, the famous English author. Samuel Anderson was also the grandfather of Robert Anderson, the commander at fort Sumter of Civil War fame.

After the death of Samuel Anderson, John Anderson became involved in litigation over the title to the land which he had purchased and in 1835 lost the entire plantation and spent all his money defending his case. He then left Kentucky and moved to Jackson County, Indiana. Prior to 1834, Wm. I. Anderson, a young man of about 20 year of age, had settled in Dubuque, Iowa. About 1838, John Anderson, then about 59 years old, and in poor health, moved from Indiana to Iowa and made his home with Wm. I. Anderson, until the time of his death in 1848 at the age of 69 years.

The eldest daughter of John Anderson was Martha, who married James McGee, and settled in Dubuque County near the home of her brother William I. Anderson.

A younger brother, John Anderson Jr., accompanied William to Iowa, and died from lack of medical attention during an attack of pneumonia.

The younger sister, Catherine, married and went to California with the covered wagon with the "Forty-Niners".

There are three branches of the family which are known at present. The Hillman and Tutt family which is the family of the second wife of William I. Anderson. the descendents of Martha Ann McGee. the other branches are scattered over the United States, and we know very little about them. It his hoped that some one can fill in the missing dates and add to the known branches of the family. "
