He left Norway on 14 Apr 1883 according to Norway, Sogn og Fjordane, Aardal, church records-Microfilm #1282864 LDS church.

When he arrived in America he went to Mahtowa,Carlton, Minnesota which was a logging camp. It is about 35 miles south of Duluth. This is where he met Bertha. She was a cook and he was a logger. He left Norway on 14 Apr 1883 and married Bertha on 11 Aug 1883. Thats 4 months so maybehe knew her in Norway or met her on the ship. She also left Norway in 1883.

He moved from Mahtowa to Duluth some time before April 1884 as Signi Magrete was born in Duluth. Also Anjohn, John, Anker and Esther were born in Duluth. Estherwas born on 1 Jan 1893 and Merle was born on 12 Mar 1895 in McIntosh, Minnesota. McIntosh was a small railroad village in north west Minnesota. between those two dates they moved up there. I have no idea why they moved there but they wereback in Duluth by 1897 as the 1905 State census shows that they were in Duluth for 8 years.

In 1900 he lived at 2110 Piedmont Ave, Duluth. Also sons John B., Anchor, Merle J. (Merle O.), Oscar N. and daughter Esther S. His age was 37, married 17 years, immigrated in 1883 and could read, write and speak English. His wife Bertha also lived there and there ages were 37, 36, 12, 10, 7, 5, and 7 mon. Source: 1900 federal census, vol 55, E.D. 284, sheet 15, line 48. Copy onhand.

In 1905 he lived at 2110 Piedmont Ave, Duluth. Also his wife Bertha, sons John B., Ankar E., Isiah M. (Merle O.) and daughters Esther S. and Myrtle C. There ages were 43, 41, 17, 15, 10, 12, and 3. He had lived at this address for 8 years and his occupation was a wood dealer. John B. was a stenographer. Source: 1905 State census, City of Duluth, Ward 7, Sub division A, Precinct 1, roll 156, sheet 51, line 8. ****It also shows they had been in Duluth for eightyears. That would be around 1897. Since Anker was born in Duluth in April 1890, they must have left for McIntosh,Polk,Minnesota between then and March 1895 when Merle was born in McIntosh. Copy on hand.

He is listed as a teamster in the1905-1906 Duluth City Directory, page 105.

He lived at 2620 West 5th Street in April 1910 with his wife Bertha 46 and children Anker 20, Esther 17, Merle 15 and Myrtle 8. He immigrated from Norway in 1883, was a naturalized citizen and could read, write and speak English. He was a teamster. He was married for 18 years. Source 1910 Federal census, Ward 7, Precinct 2, Roll 725, Sheet 19, Line 393. Copy on hand.
