About John Jones Austin

John Jones Austin of New York b3-18-1775 d6-13-1833 (drowned, west fork of Thompson's Creek, seccession in Box 3.His secession papers mentioned some interesting personal effects as these books Scott's Family Bible, Jefferson's Correspondence,Methodist magazine,Martin's large digest, one large Bible,La. Civil Code, La. Code of Practice,and Dodd's Common Place book, The Daughters of the War of 1812 erected a marker on his plantation site in W. Feliciana parish now owned by Charles Hamilton,"South of Ms.",La state line on Hwy 61.

His 1st marriage was ca1795 to Jane Meeker b Ca1777 of New Jersey. There is no recorded evidence of when he first came to the Felicianas.

John Jones Austin was a planter,soldier, slave owner and politician. He received a land grant from the Spanish Govt. and was a plantation owner since he was known to have cultivated 564 acres in the Felicianas from 1807-1820. after helping to defeat the Spanish at Baton Rouge in 1810,he later served his country in the War of 1812 by participating in the Battle of New Orleans at Chalmette as a member of the 1st Feliciana Parish Police Jury.

John Jones Austin married a 2nd time on 9-20-1804 (by Father Brady and recorded in St. Joseph Catholic Church Records, EBR Parish) Sarah Palmer of Natchez (also probably related to Robert King" Carter of Shirley Plantation, Va.) B1-29-1786 D6-14-1861 (secession and will information can be seen at St. Francisville Courthouse, Box 1dated 5-27-1861)d/0 Archibald Palmer Sr. b 1-13-1758 d. 11-14-1782/Hannah Carter b 12-25-1764 d 6-4-1861 m 11-1-4-1782(see marriage certificate translation. As mentioned earlier John Jones Austin had several books he valued, one was a large Bible having two complete translations. That Bible is now owned by Alonzo Carlyle Rogillio, According to one source, it has been rebound and is in excellent condtion.

It is possible that John Jones Austin had siblings, it has not been confirmed. The 1790 New York census shows John Austin with 3 males 16 years and over including head of household, with 2 males under the age of 16, 5 females including the head of household for a total of 6 children in the household, living in Cambridge town, Washington County.

Also the 1790 New York census shows a John Austin with one male over 16 years of age including head of household, one male under the age of 16, 5 females including the head of household for a total of 5 children in the household, residents of Whitehall town, Washington County.

There is no separate U S census available for New Jersey until 1830, it was included in the New York census.

Our John Austin could be in either New York household since he would have been 15 years of age when this census was taken. If he lived in Whitehall town, he had no male siblings, but if he lived in Cambridge town, then he would have had 3 brothers. In either case, he would have had female siblings.
