John Loren was the son of Elisha V. and Mary Louise (Hammond) Avery. On Sept. 3, 1862, in Bozrah, he married Sarah B. Mitchell. Their only child, John L. Avery, Jr. was born on May 20, 1865.

Sarah B. had previously been married to Fitch Way. After the death of John Avery she married and divorced James Bitgood. She next married James H. Rogers.
