About John Holland Baker, (CSA)

John Holland Baker, farmer, stockraiser, and soldier, was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, on April 6, 1822, the son of Lucinda (Edwards) Baker. In 1846 he married Amanda Saunders in Kentucky. The couple had six children, among them John W., Waller S., and James B. Baker. In 1858 Baker moved to the McLennan County community of Crawford and became a farmer and stockman on Tonk Creek. At the death of his wife in 1860 he considered returning to Kentucky, but when the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company H of Col. Nathaniel M. Burford's Nineteenth Texas Cavalry. After sustaining a disabling wound in a skirmish at Patterson, Missouri, on January 20, 1863, he returned to his ranch and was replaced in service by his son James. In 1862 Baker married Eva Loughridge; they had four children. Baker died on November 9, 1891, at his ranch. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco.
